Quick info
About Batanga Mexican
Batanga Mexican is a Mexican restaurant and bar at 9 Franklins Yard, in the corner of the yard in York. The queso dip arrives in a small copper pot topped with jalapeños, and steak tacos sit alongside it on the food menu. Plates come out on slate platters. The bar pours beers and Mexican wines as well as cocktails, including a mojito. The room is small, which is worth knowing for groups. The last sitting is at 9pm, and the restaurant takes guests without a reservation up to that time.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the street corn dip, praised alongside the queso dip served in a little copper pot with fresh jalapeños. Close behind are the mains: the chicken quesadilla, steak tacos, grilled burritos with a gooey cheese pull, and a lamb birria stew one diner called phenomenal. Jalapeño poppers and the guacamole also get mentions. On the drinks side, a dragonfruit martini and a mojito stand out, and one reviewer liked the cheap cocktails. Value comes up repeatedly, with portions described as larger than expected and meals as cheaper than most in York. Service is called friendly, welcoming and relaxed. The one caution is practical: one reviewer notes it is a small place, that people were being turned away, and that they suggest booking. Another mentions the spice is subtle. Several describe planning a return visit straight after eating, and one says they have been back six times.

“Fancied some Mexican food and loved the reviews I had read on Google. This hidden gem, nestled in the corner of Franklin's yard, did not disappoint. I enjoyed the Chicken Quesadilla, Street Corn Dip and Mojito Cocktail. Super and friendly service, super tasty and would highly recommend. Portions are good and reasonably priced. I would recommend booking as its only a small place, highly popular and I was lucky to get a table for 1. People were being turned away. Showing just how popular this place is!🤩”

“I came here with a group of 4 for some food before an event. The staff were friendly and prepared to help with your needs. The food was fantastic and was significantly better than my already high expectations. The atmosphere created quite a comfortable and relaxing feeling. I would highly recommend stopping to get food here as long as you do not mind subtle spice.”

“What a fantastic find in Franklins Yard. We stopped by for lunch and were absolutely blown away by the quality of the food. Everything was fresh and packed with flavour. The presentation on the slate platters was a lovely touch. We particularly enjoyed the queso dip, which came in a charming little copper pot topped with fresh jalapeños. It was the perfect start to our meal. The burritos were grilled to perfection and had such a wonderful, gooey cheese pull. We will definitely be back soon to try more of the menu. This place is a must-visit.”

“The first time I came to batanga was about a year ago and I cannot believe I’ve not done a review as we’ve been another 6 times since. We cannot visit York without going to batanga, it is so so nice, they have my favourite cocktail ever (the dragonfruit martini) and they are such great value for money. We are actually heading there again today and I cannot wait. Thank you for always being so amazing batanga 💗🥰”
