About Arras
Set inside The Old Coach House in York, Arras is a restaurant built around a fixed-price tasting format with à la carte and kitchen menu options alongside it. A set lunch menu runs at midday, and the evening service is run by two waiters covering the whole room. Guests can bring their own bottles, with corkage available, and wine flights sit on the list for those who prefer to choose on site. The dining room opens out to a garden used for seating in warmer weather. The cheese course is presented by the chef and built around selections curated by Andy Swinscoe from the Courtyard Dairy. Bookings are taken for the tasting menu, and the à la carte service welcomes walk-ins where space allows.

“We visited Arras for dinner last night and came away very impressed. There wasn’t a single misstep throughout the meal. Every dish was beautifully executed, with a real sense of thought and care behind the ingredients, combinations and presentation. The whole team were warm, friendly and genuinely interested in what they were doing. There was an impressive level of knowledge about the food, ingredients and wine, but without any of the stuffiness or self-importance that can sometimes accompany fine dining. They were enthusiastic, engaging and extremely helpful throughout the evening, which made the whole experience feel relaxed rather than formal. The wine service was very good too. There was clearly a genuine passion for wine and a willingness to talk about it in an interesting and accessible way, rather than simply reciting what was written on the wine list. And then there is the cheese course. The cheese itself was excellent, but it is almost worth ordering simply to hear the chef talk about it. His enthusiasm for the individual cheeses, where they were made, who made them and the story behind them was infectious. Excellent food (I could tell you what we had but I’m not going to as I genuinely don’t think you can make a poor choice off the menu, and I gather it regularly changes anyway which is a good thing), exceptional ingredients, a very good wine experience and, perhaps most importantly, a team who clearly care about what they do. Arras is very easy to recommend and, based on last night, somewhere we will definitely return to.”

“Just been for lunch to celebrate a birthday. Wonderful from start to finish. Attentive but not intrusive service. Food was beautifully presented and tasted fabulous. Amazing cheese course assisted by chef. Have come away feeling thoroughly spoilt. Highly recommend . Thanks so much everyone 😊”

“A joyous place for a quality supper. The team just seem to love what they do. Our group of four went à la carte. All courses excellent. Huge variety - eel to rabbit to beef sirloin. Cheese was a performance and delight to the senses. Really appreciated being able to pay corkage and bring some wines of our own - but the list is very well chosen and we had some of theirs too!”

“A totally delicious experience. The food is exceptional with wonderful ingredients and layers of flavours, from the canapés to dessert. The cheese board is incredible - curated by Andy Swinscoe from the Courtyard Dairy and presented by the chef/owner, the brilliant Adam. Brilliant!”

“Absolutely wonderful evening at Arras. Michelin star quality but without the stuffiness, and with far better and more personable service. We had the kitchen menu and wine flight, and the staff even provided a few extras along the way free of charge. Superb wines on offer, and we couldn’t have felt more comfortable, relaxed, or welcome and thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the meal in Arras’ very peaceful garden. Could not recommend more highly.”
