About Highwayman Cafe
Drivers heading along the A64 can pull in at Highwayman Cafe, a roadside cafe near York with plenty of parking on site. The kitchen keeps things focused, with a short list of around seven dishes built around breakfast baps like bacon and egg bread cake and a sausage and egg barm. Hot drinks run alongside, including large cups of tea, coffee and latte. Service is walk-in, ordered as you arrive, and the cafe opens daily during the daytime. Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the friendly, welcoming staff, with the bacon and egg bread cake and the sausage and egg barm named as good-sized breakfast bites, and a latte and a cup of tea praised alongside them. Several describe a convenient stop on the main road with plenty of parking, and one says the staff cut up a side of sausages for a dog and put them on a tray. Food is described as hot, fresh and well presented. Opinion on value is split. Some call the prices reasonable for the quality and quantity, while others find them steep, with one citing a cup of tea and another saying the "large breakfast" was quite small. A few report lapses in service, including a requested crispy bacon sandwich that arrived without crisp bacon, a server who was not pleasant, and a rude exchange when no outdoor seating could be found. One reviewer notes a token must be requested at the cafe to reach the toilets in a separate building, which they found clean enough, and another says the busy spell was worth the wait.

“I stopped by for some food and it looked lovely. The food was okay but it was expensive for the quality. The “large breakfast” was actually quite small. The young lady who served me wasn’t very pleasant. A small smile would have made a big difference in customer service. The best part of the visit was the atmosphere and the little birds.”

“This place is just OK for a bite to eat on the road. The staff are great, and really polite. The prices, however are a bit steep for what you get. £2.50 for a cup of tea? C'mon.... We had a sandwich each and asked for crispy bacon in one of them, however it wasn't crispy. It was the only stipulation we asked for, and they got it wrong. Hey ho. Toilets were in the separate building and were clean enough, you have to ask for a token at the cafe to gain access. Parking was ample, no issues there. I felt I paid way too much for what I got.”
