About Wheldrakes
Breakfast anchors the menu at Wheldrakes, a cafe on Goodramgate in York city centre, where the full English arrives billed as the Whole Hog and includes black pudding. Morning chalk boards carry extra dishes beyond the printed list, which itself runs to 86 options, so regulars have reason to check the boards before ordering. Homemade scones come with jam and Devonshire cream, and coffee, flat whites included, moves steadily through the room. The cafe takes walk-ins rather than bookings, and because the space is small, a table can take a while to free up at busier times. Serving staff bring food out to the tables. Opening runs through the daytime, with the kitchen closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers come mostly for the English breakfast, and the "whole hog" gets the most attention, with the black pudding singled out repeatedly as a highlight. Close behind are the eggs benedict and scrambled eggs, a French toast one reviewer suggests trying if it is still on the menu, and chalk board specials that another reviewer says are worth checking. Coffee, including flat whites, is described as rich and flavourful, and the homemade scone with jam and Devonshire cream earns a reviewer's claim of the best they have had. Several describe the staff as warm and friendly, and the cosy, nicely decorated room draws comment too. The one caveat is size: reviewers call it a small venue where a wait is possible, though several were seated straight away. A few mention being offered water as soon as they arrived.

“Cancel tomorrow's breakfast plans and head to Wheldrakes. Their "whole hog" is up their with the best full English I've ever had. Check out that black pudding. Oh my ❤️ I'm reliably informed that both the eggs benny and the scrambled eggs were top drawer. The coffee is also excellent. What are you waiting for?”

“From welcoming us, to the food, to the kindness, everything was flawless! After arriving in York this was the first English breakfast we had, we found this place among the ones recommended by our hotel and we understood why straight away! The place is beautifully decorated and gives off a cozy yet elegant atmosphere, not missing out being traditional. Food arrived quickly and it was amazing! I highly suggest trying both the whole load English breakfast (black pudding is a must try!), and the French Toast if it’s still in the menu, make sure to check the chalk boards mot to miss any additional dish for the morning, they usually write off-menus and you really want to check them out! I hope you enjoy this experience as much as we did!”
