About The Ship Inn Hoylake

The Ship Inn Hoylake is a pub at 80 Market St in Wirral, where live band nights run alongside a welcome for dogs, who are offered water and treats. The kitchen works from an 11-dish menu that includes a home made Sunday roast of chicken with stuffing, roast potatoes and veg, and beer-battered cod with chunky chips. A two-course lunchtime deal adds home made soup, with a steak and cheese ciabatta among the options. At the bar, hand pulled real ales sit beside a range of beers and ciders. Ribs also appear on the menu for those after something other than the roast or the cod. The pub is large inside, with plenty of room.

Customer Review Summary

Sunday roast is the draw most reviewers raise, with diners describing a homemade roast with all the trimmings, juicy chicken with stuffing, roast potatoes and a side of cheesy cauliflower in a generous portion. Close behind is the lunchtime two course deal, where the tomato and red pepper soup, the broccoli soup and a steak and cheese ciabatta get praise. A repeat visitor also singles out the beer-battered cod and chips and the rack of ribs. Drinkers note a good range of beers, ciders and hand pulled real ales, and one visitor made the trip from Liverpool to see a band on a Friday night. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and attentive. The one complaint comes from a single reviewer who was unhappy after staff cleared a three-quarters-full drink while they were away from the table, and who described the service that followed as poor. Another visitor, by contrast, was greeted with water and treats for their dog straight away.

“Popped in for an impromptu lunch stop. Very friendly greeting, with water and treats offered immediately for my pooch. A very lovely glass of Malbec and the lunchtime 2 course deal... The soup (tomato and red pepper) was delicious and the little touches (like well-made coleslaw and a light lemony dressing on the side salad) made the meal delightful.”

“atmosphere, lovely. The service however, a small large woman took my drink (3/4 full) when i went the toilet for 30 seconds, they took my drink and told me to "p***" "f*** off" after politely asking for my drink back. DO NOT GO HERE, staff are horrendous and have no human sympathy.”

“We’ve visited The Ship Inn in Hoylake several times now and it never disappoints. On our previous visit I had the rack of ribs, which were excellent, but this time I decided to try the beer-battered cod and chips. The cod was absolutely delicious – thick, flaky and cooked to perfection inside a beautifully crisp, golden batter. The chunky chips were spot on too, making for a fantastic meal from start to finish. The food is consistently good, the portions are generous, and the quality is exactly why we keep coming back. A special mention also goes to the bar staff, who are always friendly, welcoming and attentive. It’s that combination of great food, good atmosphere and excellent service that makes The Ship Inn such a reliable choice whenever we’re in Hoylake. Highly recommended, and we’ll definitely be back again. 🍺🐟🍟”

“I went here on Friday night to see a band playing called Collider. The pub itself was very nice and the staff were lovely. We spoke to quite a few people that were all friendly and had a really good evening. A good selection of beers including hand pulled real ales. I would certainly make the trip over from Liverpool again to watch a band at this venue.”
