Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the staff, describing front of house as friendly, welcoming and constantly on the go, with several praising help given at a family wake and to a carer finding a seat. Food draws close behind: the chicken wings are called incredible with a large portion, and the chicken and ham hock pie has big chunks of chicken, while braised beef is described as very tender. Others mention home made quiche, chicken strips, a BLT bloomer on soft bread and a mixed grill. Dog owners note a treat jar at the bar, though one says dogs are only allowed on hard floors. The complaints are specific. One diner waited 45 minutes at a steady lunchtime, then got a Scouse with five small pieces of beef that arrived less than halfway to a reasonable temperature and had to be reheated. Another reports forgotten water and condiments, cold peas, tasteless chips, a rubbery cheeseburger and a long wait for the bill, plus a shrugged answer when a shandy price was queried.

“Ah look. We are desperate to like the place and rarely if ever complain and we didn't on the day. Me and my wife are both in the industry believe me we get it and bad customers we aren't. Can't fault the FOH at all they were lovely. Menu looked like one of the better pub menus I've seen around here and the prices were decent. Not expensive not flash, a proper pub menu thumbs up well played. A kids burger ordered with cheese, a pie ordered with chips instead of mash and a bowl of Scouse. Took 45 minutes on a lunchtime that was steady at best. Truthfully is we never actually take wait times into account up until the thing we're waiting for isnt worth the wait. Kids burger no cheese...fine....pie with mash instead of chips as ordered ...we'll grin and bear it .. .stew that's not passing as warm is a no go. It's a horrible complaint trope sending things back because of temperature. But the 5 small pieces of beef with 2 quartered carrots and a few chunks of potatoes (the cabbage I had to wait for) sold as Scouse wasn't actually cold but more like less than halfway to a reasonable serving temp, as if the chef said 'that'll do send it' because of ticket times. Unfortunately with things like stews you can't half do portions as they simply won't keep the heat so they'll reach the table cool. Low cost high margin remember don't start getting greedy by rationing pieces of meat per portion better to be slightly generous with the plating of cheaper stuff (potatoes carrots gravy). After getting the meals sorted and reheated it came to a 6/10 so a bit better than ok but not worth the faff. At the end of the day there was no actual cooking here apart from a small kids burger. A pie and stew reheated. Absolutely fine by the way I'm not expecting stew and pie done a la minute. Just too many basic errors yes we got a few apologies but meh we won't be back to eat.”

“Best chicken wings we’ve ever had. Come Sunday for the market, got chicken wings as a bite to eat, they were incredible and such a large portion for a small plate. The pub was very busy but we got a table easy, staff in front of house don’t stop for a minute constantly on the go, yet all still very friendly and welcoming!”

“Originally only came in for a quick drink after a nice walk with the dog until we realised the time, so decided to get dinner. I had the chicken and ham hock pie and my partner had the braised beef. Food was fantastic. She raved about the beef - very tender, pulled apart with no effort and zero fatty bits. The pie was really nice - big chunks of chicken and plenty of ham hock. Was expecting standard pub grub, but this was definitely a step up, and very good prices too. And of course, the dog treat jar at the bar was welcomed by our German shepherd. Staff were friendly and helpful. Will definitely make it a regular visit on our royden dog walks.”

“This is a nice little place to drop into if you are passing. There locals will know all about it. For us it was just a quick Saturday lunchtime drink but you can get any idea of a place if only from first impressions. Modern rustic inside that had a nice atmosphere, plenty of outdoor seating too. The staff were very engaging and my Mr Red ale was excellent although a few more mls would have been appreciated. We didn't eat here although the meals that went past our table did look rather nice. Dog friendly but only allowed on the hard floor surfaces. There seems to be a lot going on in way of events and suspect these would get very busy.”
