About Gardener's Retreat

Gardener's Retreat is a cafe set inside a garden centre on Henley Rd in Studley. Dogs are welcome both indoors and outdoors, which makes it an option for visitors who bring their dog along. The menu includes jacket potatoes, with fillings such as tuna, and fish and chips. Wraps, sandwiches, paninis and a soup of the day sit alongside them. For drinks, the cafe serves coffee, including cappuccino and flat white, as well as hot chocolate. Customers order at the till. The toilets are in the garden centre part rather than directly in the cafe area.

Customer Review Summary

Service speed and consistency are the recurring complaints. One reviewer waited 30 minutes for breakfast and had to ask about it, and another describes food taking far longer than expected when the cafe was nearly empty, arriving cold with soggy toast and a watered down coffee. Another says a hot and cold order came out separately, so one diner finished before her mother's meal arrived. Two reviewers describe rude staff, one after being turned away just before the 3pm closing. The toilets, which sit in the garden centre rather than the cafe, are called awful, with water leaking on the floor.

“Disappointed!!! Appalled at the service. I can understand pressures when busy or a bad day? However the service was shocking. The second time trying this place out. First time it was 14:50, they stop usually at 15:00, they took a ladies order in-front and shouted that being the last one. Went elsewhere and put up with that. SECOND TIME - having a lovely afternoon with my mom, fancied some lunch. Ordered a jacket potato. Which was like a leather shoe :/ but I shut up and put up. I finished my entire meal, they even collected my plate, whilst still waiting. When mums did arrive When given her food - mum politely said “it would’ve been nice to of eaten with my daughter than separately ”. Waitress replied: “yeah well it’s hot and cold so they come out separate bc of the tickets”, very abruptly and started shaking her head. With her delightful welcoming warm response. We walked out, mums food untouched, didn’t feel comfortable. Not sure why a hot spud (more like Luke-warm but anyway) is classed as cold and if so explain this to your customers that you don’t eat together. Just poor service but looking at the reviews, nothings being done. Shame as a lovely spot. Won’t be back.”

“Went for a mooch around the garden centre and a spot of lunch with my elderly parents and my sister. Lovely, light, clean, bright and welcoming cafe/restaurant, service was fabulous - absolutely can’t fault it. Quite a broad menu - from wraps/sandwiches, soup of the day, filled jacket potatoes, to main-course salads, hot mains - at our table we had a chicken-tikka salad, fish and chips, lasagne and a tuna jacket. All well presented, good homely food, decent prices (probably fairly typical for a garden-centre restaurant). Good range of hot and cold drinks. Mainly more mature clientele with a few younger families with young children. Would definitely be more than happy to call in for lunch again. One big grumble - the toilets are awful. They are not directly within the restaurant area but are part of the garden centre. Really tiny, water leaking on the ladies’ floor, surprisingly poor standard when compared to the restaurant and the centre generally. If those can be improved then this is a big winner 😃”
