About Tokyo Table

Tokyo Table is a buffet restaurant at 96 Castle Rd in Southsea, with a sushi bar on one side of the room and a bar of hot Chinese food on the other. The sushi side runs to salmon maki and tempura prawn rolls, while the hot side carries chow mein, curry, rice and dim sum. Dessert is built around a chocolate fountain, with ice cream and mini cakes alongside. Drinks such as squashes, lemon water and chrysanthemum tea come with the buffet, so guests can fill a glass without paying extra, and additional drinks can be bought. The restaurant sets out separate lunch and evening pricing for the sit-down buffet. A water fountain sits in the dining room.

Customer Review Summary

Sushi is the draw reviewers raise most, described as fresh, good quality and plentiful, with salmon singled out repeatedly: the tempura prawn and salmon roll, the salmon maki, and a run of different salmon sushi. The Chinese hot dishes sit close behind, including chow mein, noodles, curry, rice, fried snacks, and dim sum and chicken balls cooked fresh on request. A couple of diners call the flavours authentic. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, and several mention that squash, lemon water and chrysanthemum tea come included. Dessert also earns praise, with ice cream, mini cakes and a chocolate fountain. Complaints are few but specific. One reviewer found the sushi rice too sweet and quickly overwhelming, and another thought the hot selection small for the money and not suited to a date night. Several call the sit-down meal good value, yet one felt the takeaway box was a rip off compared with eating in, and said they would have dined in had they known.

“The food was quite good. The price was very reasonable (£20 per person). I mainly enjoyed the salmon dishes. The food here is prepared by Japanese or Chinese cooks, so the flavors are quite authentic.”

“I came here yesterday for lunch with my friends and my experience couldn’t have been better! The sushi was so fresh and delicious with really good quality ingredients and a good selection, my favourite roll was the tempura prawn and salmon! The Chinese buffet was warm and flavourful, absolutely perfect with a good selection of noodles, curry, rice and fried snacks. Desserts were also included, with a selection of mini cakes and three flavours of ice cream, a nice touch. There were a selection of squashes, lemon water and chrysanthemum tea for free, yet additional drinks can be purchased too. The restaurant was clean and had a really nice relaxed vibe, there was gentle music playing and a nice water fountain, yet still a good atmosphere to chat. The staff were lovely and £15 for this was amazing! Truly a Portsmouth hidden gem, we’ll definitely be back :)”

“Lovely good value for a sit down meal. Rip off for a takeaway box. £14.50! Nearly left it wouldn't have bought it if l knew it was that expensive would have sat in and eaten for £20!”

“The food was very delicious, the atmosphere was great, and the restaurant was very clean. The restroom was also very clean, which made me very satisfied. The prices were reasonable as well. The staff were very friendly and provided excellent service, which made me feel very comfortable. However, I felt that the sushi rice was a bit too sweet, and it became overwhelming quite quickly. I hope the sweetness of the sushi rice can be improved in the future. Other than that, the food was very fresh, and I was satisfied with everything else. It is still a restaurant worth recommending, and I hope the issue I mentioned will be improved the next time I visit👍”
