About Maya

Set in a restored corner building on Jubilee Terrace in Southsea, Maya is a Latin American restaurant, cocktail bar and tapas room with bar-height tables and limited seating. The kitchen runs a sharing menu of small plates, including patatas bravas in a cake-like presentation, slow-cooked ribs with BBQ sauce served in a main-course portion, and individual bites such as egg rolls and cheese croquettes, with a few vegetarian options including a BBQ carrot dish. The cocktail bar runs alongside the food, and the room is air-conditioned with background music at a moderate volume. Reservations are required. Walk-ins are accommodated when space allows.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers consistently praise the food, singling out the slow cooked ribs and the BBQ carrot for vegetarians as standouts, with tapas plates described as carefully crafted and full of flavour. Several mention being seated without a reservation, though booking ahead is advised due to limited space, and one diner found their table unusually tall. A few note chewy steak and a fusion concept that strays from expected Mexican dishes.

“Delicious tapas and drinks. The slow cooked ribs have a lovely bbq sauce and you get a main course size serving. I had them with papas bravas. I also had the small bite (nibbles) a single (you can order by the each) carnitas egg roll and cheese croquet. All delicious and I was quite full by the end. I forget his name but the server was kind, attentive and fun to chat with. I appreciated they sat me without a reservation, as most tables were full. My table was crazy tall so I imagine it is not preferred by many, hence why Iit was available for me. A reservation is recommended as space is limited. The restaurant is in a lovely restored corner building. It is bustling but I never felt rushed. Background music was an up tempo dance beat but not too loud.”

“Lovely air-conditioned restaurant, tastefully decorated with amazing staff. Food was really good, two starters, 4 plates of Tapas, bottle of wine £80 including service charge is phenomenal value. The ribs are to die for.”

“Wonderful restaurant, the food was out of this world and the service excellent. Wish I lived closer! Would definitely return when we're in the area”

“Amazing food and cocktails, would recommend.”
  • Rosa Melosa
“Really good meal. Food arrived quickly. Particularly strong on catering for vegetarians - would 100% recommend the BBQ carrot (how do they make a carrot taste soooo good?!?!) Waitress was also really friendly and efficient.”
