About Agora Restaurant
Agora Restaurant is an independent Turkish restaurant at 9 Clarendon Rd in Southsea, run by the same family since 2002. Food is cooked on a charcoal grill, and a chefs table sits beside it, so diners can watch the cooking up close. The mixed grill and the lamb shish kebab come from that grill. A family mezze gives a table a way to share a spread of smaller plates. The restaurant opens daily, evenings only. Reservations are made by email and confirmed by email, which suits planning ahead for a group meal. For celebrations, the family brings out a birthday cake.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the fresh, authentic food, much of it grilled in view of the dining room. The mixed grill, lamb shish kebab, and family mezze draw the most specific praise, with the vegetarian moussaka, hummus, and tzatziki close behind, and one diner likening the food to what they ate in Turkey. Service is where opinions split. Several describe slow or absent attention at the end of the meal: no dessert menu offered, a bill arriving unasked, and in one case a long wait to pay after finishing. One reviewer says hostesses doubted an emailed reservation and seated them at the chefs table, another had to fetch cutlery from the tray, and a third wanted water refilled more often. Others call the staff friendly and hard working, and two describe a birthday cake given on the house, one with candles and a sung happy birthday.

“Myself and my partner are both in the hospitality industry and have very little time to get out and enjoy our local independent restaurants, so this evening we took the chance and Agora has been on my go to list for a while. The food was delicious and plentiful and we were fortunate enough to take home what we couldn’t manage however, and it pains me to say this but the service was awful, and I do not say that lightly but had there been a service charge added we would have asked for it to be removed. We were “greeted” with slight despair, we were not made to feel welcome at all, we were not asked once of our food was ok, I had to go in search of cutlery and help myself from the cutlery tray before we could eat. We waited so long for someone to come to our table in the end we went in search of someone to pay and left. The restaurant is beautiful and the food is lovely but the customer service needs some attention.”

“Food was really nice, didn’t take long to arrive at the table everything tasted fresh and warm would have been a five star review but service lacked at the end when we didn’t get offered a desert menu and instead we received the bill when we didn’t ask for it.”

“Agora has a genuine warm and authentic aura. You could be forgive for thinking you are in the Mediterranean! The food is delicious. You can see it being cooked infront of you and it really adds a certain freash aspect to dinner. The food is priced fairly for the quality and size. I got the mixed grill and it was delicious. The staff are friendly and hard working. Would happily go again.”

“What a wonderful experience! The food was fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. A big thank you to the chef for the outstanding quality and authentic taste. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. I will definitely be coming back!”

“We got the family mezze option for all of us to share. The staff were nice enough to give our friend a birthday cake on the house and let us stay till the last moment without kicking us out. We really appreciate this. Thank you! One small improvement could be some waiting staff being more approachable/happy and for them to fill water more often as they were never available.”
