Customer Review Summary

Friendly, helpful service is what reviewers raise first, from staff patient with a customer struggling with an app to a server who made sure a friend with allergies could choose safely. The setting comes close behind, with river views across the Hamble and window tables for watching cruise ships go by. Diners single out the salmon, though one found it a little dry, along with the burgers, sticky toffee pudding, a halloumi vegetarian salad and Estrella Galicia on tap. The Monday pub quiz also draws praise. The recurring complaint is slow food on busy nights. One reviewer with a booked table describes a main arriving two hours late, a squid starter cooked in old oil, and low alcohol drinks running out. Another waited a long time and then found half the plate empty of chips. That reviewer also felt walk-ins were turned away while tables sat empty under reserved signs, and another reviewer suggests booking for a meal. The manager apologised and brought more chips.

“On Monday 24th August, my wife & myself visited The Rising Sun for a late afternoon lunch. The place was a little busy, but not packed & there were a few tables with nobody sat at, but with ‘Reserved’ signs on the tables. We were immediately met with a “Can we help you?”, which is a little odd for walking into a public house, normally, you get asked that when at the bar. My wife explained we’d like a table to eat. We were asked “Have you booked?” Which we hadn’t (didn’t realise we had to). We were told, there was one table we could have over there, the lady pointed to a table. She stated, she would be over to clear it up in a sec. That never happened. My wife went up to the bar to place our order, paid £20 with a gift card & the outstanding on her credit card. Thirty minutes go by, still no food arrived. By now we are engaging in small talk with people on the table next to us. They ordered just before us. We mention how long it is taking for the food to arrive. They explained to us that they were told it may take a while for the food to to arrive. We were not told this at all. If we had known it may take this long, we may have gone elsewhere locally. 40 minutes have now gone by & the table next to us, their food arrives. Shortly afterward, so does our order. So we waited just over 40 minutes & I was so disappointed. See photo added for what arrived. Half the plate was empty! The young lad brought the order over, I mentioned that was a long time to wait & I asked him tongue in cheek if that was half a portion of chips? Straight away, he got very defensive & had a bad attitude towards me. He said “You were told it may be a long wait”. We were NOT told this!!! If I was in his position, I would have responded with something like “Sorry you had to wait so long & are disappointed with the order sir”, but no, he asked me what the problem was with the order? (See pic again). With a belligerent tone, he said I can get the manager if you want? To which I said that would be great. The young lad, needs to understand, if a customer has a concern, it’s not them being awkward. It’s just something that needs to be addressed. There will be those that say something & those that say nothing. We all learn in life by mistakes & experiences. A couple of minutes later, over comes the manager. Initially, she had a defensive attitude. I explained about the 40 minute wait & for £13.75, I felt that order was disappointing after waiting so long. She agreed to get some more chips. She then stated to me there was no need to swear at her staff. At no stage did I swear at her staff or in conversation. Now, at this stage, I did raise my voice slightly & asked if anyone around had heard me swear & to let the manager know if I did. At that point, the man on the next table interrupted & backed me up that at no stage did I swear at her staff. Now, I’m presuming the young lad had lied to her making out I swore. Yes, the manager, really softened her tone now, was genuinely apologetic. Appreciated our concern & said she would address it. Which to be fair, she did & a good resolution was the outcome, that myself & my wife were happy with. While we were waiting for our order, we observed, anyone that came into the pub, was asked “May I help you” or something similar. A couple, who came in for a drink with a couple of dogs, were told they could have a small table at the back of the pub. Others were told they didn’t have a table etc. All this despite there being some tables with nobody sat at & ‘Reserved’ signs on them. This pub, is obviously mainly food focused over drinking & in my opinion, is close to excluding those people who want to casually pop in for a drink or a meal spontaneously. I really think the reservation system needs to be scrapped. I’m not saying I won’t pop to this pub again, but never, will I ever pop in spontaneously again.”

“Great pub in a gorgeous location. We were staying with my in laws and came for an evening meal, it is extremely popular, so I would recommend booking a table if you want a meal. If you're just going for a drink, they provide plastic glasses so you can sit on the riverside on a nice day/evening. We used the Greene King app and I was struggling to get it to work, the staff were so friendly and patient with me! The food was delicious and come fairly quickly considering how busy they were. Would definitely go again and highly recommend 👍🏼”

“Oh dear, waited 1hour plus for order and over an hour half for any food, squid starter cooked in old oil yuk! Table booked 7pm meal arrived 9pm, staff very good but really under pressure, give this place a miss unless you just want a drink, but not zero alcohol as they ran out of all low alcohol drinks by 9pm.”
