Quick info
About Mario's Catch
Mario's Catch, a fish and chips shop on Norman Road in Smethwick, serves orange chips from Monday to Wednesday and standard chips on the remaining days, so regulars can time a visit to the version they prefer. The menu runs past the fryer basics to curry sauce and kebab meat, and gluten free fish and chips are cooked in a separate fryer for anyone avoiding gluten. Orders are placed and collected at the counter, with no booking taken, and a wait is common when the shop is busy. High chairs are on hand for families with young children eating in. The kitchen also arranges bulk orders of hot fish and chip meals for group events, which suits catering a gathering off site. It trades Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips served piping hot draws the most repeat praise, with reviewers describing chips fried fresh and salted in front of them and food that arrives fully cooked. Close behind, one diner who eats gluten free singles out fish and chips cooked in a dedicated separate fryer and staff described as accommodating, while another points to orange chips earlier in the week and one expressly recommends the place for its battered chips. A church group thanks the team for preparing 52 hot fish and chip meals for a harvest supper two years running, and several credit the counter service, one server in particular, for keeping a crowded shop moving in a place they call clean and organised. The complaints cluster on service and consistency: one reviewer found a member of staff unwelcoming and the music too loud to order over, one reports stomach trouble after the kebab meat and curry sauce, another says the last three visits were the opposite of the usual hot food, and one was told there were no chips half an hour before closing.

“I visited this fish and chips shop recently. The shop was quite busy at the time. There were a few girls working and one man as well. Unfortunately, the man did not seem very sincere about his work and his attitude towards customers was not very welcoming. There was also some loud Indian-style music playing in the shop, which was much louder than what you normally hear in most other restaurants. Because of the loud music, I had to repeat my order several times. I even tried to politely mention it to the man, but he seemed to ignore me and did not respond properly. The food itself was good and I enjoyed it. However, the service and the overall environment of the shop need improvement. A better customer attitude and a calmer atmosphere would make the experience much better.”

“As someone who has to eat Gluten-free food, it was a blessing to see that Marios Catch offer Gluten Free Fish and Chips cooked in a specific fryer. The staff were extremely accommodating and the food was great. My parents who aren't gluten-free have had food from here multiple times over the years and have also praised how friendly the staff are and how nice the food is. Thanks again!”
