About Ama Restaurant
Ama Restaurant serves halal food on Cape Hill in Smethwick, with guests offered free lentil soup, water, and dates upon being seated and before ordering. The menu runs through Qozi, a mix grill platter served with rice, bulgur, and salad, and dolma, alongside hummus and falafel. Kunafeh is available for those wanting something sweet. Kurdish-style decoration and background traditional music furnish the dining room, where table service brings orders out once taken. Walk-ins are accepted, though reservations are recommended and a wait can build at busier times. Families with young children are accommodated with high chairs, and dogs are welcome in the space. The kitchen also packs takeaway boxes on request for those eating off site. It opens daily, giving diners flexibility on when to visit.

Customer Review Summary
Kurdish and Iraqi dishes draw the most consistent praise, with the dolma, aubergine broth, hummus, and Lamb Qozi singled out as standouts, and the free soup or lentil soup served at the start of the meal mentioned repeatedly as a welcoming touch. The mix grill platter and its accompanying rice and bulgur also earn steady approval, though a few diners note undercooked spots, one describing a wing and a meat tikka that were raw inside despite being charred outside. Close behind the food, many reviewers highlight a warm, authentic atmosphere with Kurdish decor and music, and generous portions at reasonable prices. Service is the clearest divide: several describe attentive, respectful staff who make them feel at home, while a recurring thread of complaints describes being ignored until repeatedly flagging down waiters, slow order-taking, and one diner reporting a hair in their soup that was promptly replaced. Other negative reviews describe stale-tasting food, undercooked or unfresh fries and falafel, and complaints that went unresolved after being raised with staff. Several reviewers say they traveled long distances, from Derby or Wigan, specifically to return, and one recounts being told a reservation wasn't needed for their visit.

“The food is good and the taste is good and the bread is really tasty. just the portions are small. I didn’t like the service there. I don’t think I will go specially for this place again only if there is no other options”

“I visited AMA Restaurant and had a genuinely great experience. I called ahead to book a table, but they kindly told me there was no need, which made everything simple and convenient. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the prices were surprisingly cheap for the quality they offer. Overall, I’m very happy with my visit and would definitely recommend this place to others.”

“⭐️ 1/10 – Incredibly Disappointed. What happened to this place? I used to love this restaurant, which is why I traveled from quite far away to visit it today. Unfortunately, it has gone completely downhill, and I am incredibly unhappy with almost my entire experience. The Service: Absolutely terrible. We were ignored for a long time before anyone even bothered to come over and take our order. The Food: The only saving grace was the naan, which was actually fresh. However, the rest of the food was really bad. It tasted stale and old, almost like it had been cooked yesterday and just reheated. This place used to be very good, but a piece of fresh naan isn't enough to justify the terrible service and old food. I won’t be making the long trip back here again.”

“My first experience of Kurdish food - loved it! Beautiful dishes serviced with traditional bread. Really great flavours and huge portions.”
