About The Happy Haddock
The Happy Haddock is a fish and chips takeaway at 53 High St in Sandown. The kitchen cooks its fish and chips in beef dripping, and the menu also lists pea fritters and baked bean fritters. Senior and kids' portions of fish and chips are offered alongside the standard order. Tables inside let customers eat on site as well as take food away. Orders are given a number, and the counter calls it when the food is ready. A wait for orders is usual.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the fish and chips cooked in beef dripping, with one praising the light, crispy batter and excellent fish, and another noting that the smell of dripping greets customers at the door. Close behind, the chips draw praise as proper chippy chips from some, while others call them burnt, soft or soaked in oil. The curry sauce and mushy peas get a nod, and a son's saveloy was called fantastic. The pea fritter, though, was more like a pea puree to one reviewer. Complaints about the fish carry real weight. One found the batter rock hard and the cod so dry it separated from the coating, another found more batter than fish, and a third called the standard portion tiny, though tasty. Others say pies and fish sat under the heat lamps despite claims of cooking to order, and one pie pastry was too hard to cut. Order mistakes also recur, including a missing battered sausage and salt and vinegar nearly forgotten. One group was refused a seat inside because the clock had just passed the cutoff, even though the receipt showed the earlier time.

“Worst fish I've ever had. The batter was rock hard and inedible. The fish is supposed to be cod? so dry it had come away from the batter. It was a senior portion for £9 with chips and mushy peas. The chips were fine. I'd like to know if the senior fish is different from the normal cod because it certainly didn't taste like it.”

“Fantastic fish and chips cooked in beef dripping. Amazing value £22.50 for 4 kids fish and chips with curry sauce, amazing price. Was really busy but that certainly did not affect the quality of the food served. Highly recommend. Plenty of tables inside to eat.”

“Nice Fish, but the standard size is Tiny, smallest piece of fish I've ever seen ! Even smaller than a child's portion. It was though very tasty, so go Large !!”

“Classic England fish and chips. There were quite a lot of customers on Monday night. Service waa quite ok. Food itself is quite poor. For those who likes fatty food cooked with lots of oil, it should be fine.”

“A typical fish and chip place, no fancy stuff just great food, cooked to perfection, the smell of beef dripping greats you as you walk in and then the staff,”
