About Thai Elephant Richmond

Thai Elephant Richmond is a Thai restaurant at 1 Wakefield Rd in Richmond, housed in an English pavilion with Thai decorative touches. The menu centres on curry and noodle dishes, with massaman curry and pad Thai among the plates and duck spring rolls as a starter. Vegetarian and pescatarian options sit alongside the meat dishes, and the kitchen has accommodated requests such as sauce on the side or a noodle swap. Dishes arrive in a bowl on a base with a tea light underneath to keep the food warm at the table. The restaurant is walk-in. Mango with sticky rice closes the menu as a dessert.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the curries, with a massaman, a panang and a green curry with chicken all described as tasty, and fresh, flavourful food runs through the positive reviews. Friendly, attentive staff come close behind. They are credited with handling a busy room and with accommodating requests for sauce on the side, no aubergines and a changed noodle. Also singled out are the crispy chilli fish, mango with sticky rice, pork pad thai and a duck roll, and vegetarian and pescatarian diners found plenty to choose from. Several call the interior cozy and quiet, and several consider portions and prices reasonable. The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the pad thai cold, the massaman beef tasting frozen with only about five small pieces, and the tom yum overwhelmingly sour, and later reports that three diners had stomach symptoms the next morning. Another found the duck spring rolls weak and the bill too high for the food. One lunch table noted that dishes arrived in bowls set over a tea light that kept the food hot.

“I came here yesterday with my family and it was overall a very positive experience. It is a little tucked away from the main high street / river area in Richmond, and close to the main bus stop. The environment was very pleasant, a little quiet, it was a wednesday, nice interior design that feels very “authentic thai”. The food was delicious, we ordered a platter of starters and all tasted great. I mix and matched a massamaan and a panang, and both were really tasty. The service was excellent too, two ladies that were both very accomodating and friendly. Overall, it worked out at £35-40 per head, which included drinks, starters, and mains, great value given the price of eating out these days. I would highly reccommend this place if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful, authentic thai food experience that tasts great, and isn’t overpriced. :):)”

“As a customer eating out, you simply do not expect to be paying premium prices for food that tastes like frozen, pre-made meals — yet that’s exactly what this place delivers. The Pad Thai (£15) was served cold and tasted like a frozen ready-meal aka ketchup stirred with noodles😅 — honestly no better than the Pad Thai kits you can buy from Tesco. Completely unacceptable at that price point. The Massaman beef (£17) was even worse. The beef clearly tasted frozen, and there were only about five small pieces in the entire dish. For £17, that’s just ridiculous. The Tom Yum soup was overwhelmingly sour — not balanced in flavour at all. It genuinely tasted like drinking straight vinegar rather than a proper Thai soup. Overall, this place is overpriced and serves what feels like low-quality, pre-made frozen food. I strongly recommend avoiding it. There are far better options nearby — for example, a Thai restaurant next to Napoli on the road offers lunch meals for around £9, and at least the food is freshly made and tastes authentic. Save your money and go elsewhere. Just to follow up my review yesterday. Unfortunately all three of us (myself, my sister, and my girlfriend) experienced gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhoea, the following morning after eating. Given that we all shared the same meal, this raises serious concerns about food hygiene, handling, or storage practices. We would strongly recommend the establishment reviews its food safety standards to prevent this from happening to other customers.”

“A hidden gem that shouldn't be missed! Away from the bustle, great food, excellent service. We came for lunch and ordered a variety of dishes. 2 of us are vegetarian/pescatarian and there were plenty of options for us to choose from. The dishes were served in a bowl perched on a base where a tea light was placed, keeping our food hot. Every dish was flavourful, I'm sure you can't go wrong with whatever you order.”

“The duck spring rolls weren’t very good. The satay chicken skewers were tasty, but overall it was really expensive — about £90. Even though the environment was nice, the food was pretty meh overall. It’s too pricey for what it is, so I wouldn’t go back.”

“Delicious food, drink, and dessert. The chilli fish was crispy, tasty, and perfectly cooked. We requested a change on the noodle, and it was good. The mango with sticky rice was also delicious. The staff (a lady) was very nice, friendly, and attentive. The ambiance was cozy with soft music, and good interior design, very comfortable, and not too noisy. Seating area is only available indoor. Toilets for customers are available.”
