Quick info
About Pad Thai Story (Wandsworth)
Pad Thai Story (Wandsworth) is a small Thai restaurant at 543 Old York Rd in London, open daily. The menu centres on pad thai, ordered with chicken, beef and shrimp, or prawn, or in a soft shell crab version. Roast Duck Pad Thai and Pad Thai Tempura give diners two further ways to order the noodle dish, so a group can order several pad thai variations and compare them at one table. Curries sit alongside the noodles, including a Massaman curry with lamb. Som Tum, the papaya salad, is a regular starter and makes a natural opener before the main dishes arrive.

Customer Review Summary
Pad Thai is the main draw, with reviewers praising the chicken version as fresh and fragrant, the beef and shrimp version as delicious, and the soft shell crab pad thai as a standout. The som tum and papaya salad also earn praise, along with the calamari starter and a beef curry. Mains draw the most complaints, though. One reviewer found a red curry with duck too salty to finish, and others describe dry duck, a dry pad thai with only two prawns, and tough lamb in the massaman curry. A few call the food not very authentic, naming the tom yum and beef soup, and one reports a spongy tofu in the green curry and a pink chicken satay. Slow food and slow service come up several times, though some did not mind. One reviewer describes a dispute over the discretionary service charge, reporting aggressive staff who told them to go to the takeaway shop across the street. Staff are otherwise called friendly and lovely, and diners like the small space and the outside seating.

“Stopped by for dinner on a warm summer monday evening. Food was excellent , good prices , excellent atmosphere siting outside . Only issue was slow service but we didn’t mind.”

“Food was below average, particularly the ‘egg fried rice’’. It had no visible egg in and had zero flavour. Chicken satay was a bit pink. The tofu in the green curry was like a sponge that never changed no matter how much you chewed. There was also a constant rubbing / vibration from the floor. Service was cute though”

“Food was pretty good, especially the soft shell crab pad thai and the beef curry. Small restaurant but there is seating outside as well.”

“I rarely leave negative reviews, but this was genuinely the worst service I’ve ever experienced anywhere. The food itself was mediocre at best so it certainly didn’t justify the price. The real issue, however, came when we asked for the discretionary service charge to be removed from the bill. We were served with absolute minimum service. The staff just took our order, brought our dishes to us and didn’t ask in the meantime if everything was okay and if we needed anything. The mains took a while to come out to a point where I had to ask if they know how long the food was going to be. Upon a polite request to remove the service charge one of the female staff got very aggressive and tried to harass us into paying - claiming her manager would get mad and ask exactly why we had not paid it and that they would not remove it unless a reason was given. She pointed to the menu where it states “A discretionary Service charge will be applied”. The service charge is paid with discretion of the CUSTOMER not the restaurant - by law I am not obligated to pay it. We were then told that if we didn’t want to pay the service charge, we should have said so before ordering, in which case they would have refused to serve us. To make matters worse, our waitress told us that if we didn’t want to pay the service charge, we could “go to the takeaway shop across the street.” Another member of staff then came over aggressively and Instead of listening, she repeatedly slammed her hands on the table and kept interrupting us by saying, “I’m talking.” During this exchange, I could hear another member of staff laughing in the background, which only made the situation even more disrespectful. When we eventually said that we would never be returning, the response we received was simply, “Good.” I’ve never experienced such rude, confrontational behaviour in a restaurant and am amazed at the absolute lack of professionalism from multiple members of staff in this restaurant. How can anyone know they have received a “good service” before ordering? payment for service charge is not something that is a pre-requisite to ordering a meal - ridiculous.”
