Quick info
About New Ground Coffee
New Ground Coffee is a coffee roastery in Oxford at Simon House, founded in Headington. It runs as a social enterprise, providing jobs and training to ex-offenders. The beans are roasted on site, and the limited seating, including a few stools, sits right next to the roastery equipment. The space is a back-alley, workshop-style unit round the back, off the main road. The short menu covers espresso, milk and filter drinks, with usually two single-origin filter coffees to choose from. Pastries include a croissant, an egg tart and a cinnamon bun, with one gluten-free option. Retail bags of beans are sold to take home, alongside merch and beans from a guest roaster. NHS staff get a discount with a Trust ID card.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the filter coffee and single origins roasted on-site, describing one with chocolate notes, another with a strawberry note that was not sour, and a funky, fruity filter option. Baristas are described as friendly and knowledgeable, offering recommendations on beans, and many buy beans to take home, including a guest coffee from Amsterdam. Close behind are the egg tart, croissant, and cinnamon bun, though one reviewer calls the pastries solid but not special. The recurring complaint is seating: a few say there are too few seats and stools, and the outside seating is two wooden crates placed on the entrance slope. One reviewer waited a long while on a busy day, received a wrong coffee, and saw staff ask around to confirm orders. Another found the flat white overly foamy and bitter. A reviewer adds that a free-drink perk for bean buyers would be welcome.

“One of the best coffees in Oxford as far as my knowledge goes, and certainly the best (and only serious option) in Headington. Drinks are made well and with attention to detail. Pastries, albeit not too special, are still quite solid. Staff is super friendly and helpful. My only recommendation for this place would be to improve the the seating and ambiance. Contrary to other reviews, I find the seating to be insufficient and the layout to encourage the hoarding of large tables by small groups or individuals. There also never seem to be enough stools for the amount of seating space, which is already quite low. The outside seating consists of two beaten-down wooden crates with rusty nails and are always inconveniently placed on the entrance slope. Honestly, who makes this choice!? I understand the design is meant to be minimalistic and industrial, but some of it just feels off-putting. Literally my only “but” about this place so far on what is otherwise an outstanding product and an outstanding service. New Ground, if you’re reading this, please consider it!”

“Friendly service and serves some of the best coffee I have ever had (I've been 3-4 times now) - and I have had some absolutely superb coffee in the past. Discount for NHS employees (I think it's 10%). Just show them your Trust ID card. I would highly recommend you at least try once. You won't regret it!”

“Fantastic espresso & cinnamon bun. Great vibe on a Sunday morning. ☕️”

“Went on a Sunday afternoon as I had a couple of hours to kill. Coffee was not great, I have to say. The reviews implied this was for serious coffee heads and I got an overly foamy flat white with a distinctly bitter taste like milk was reheated twice or the porta filter wasn't clean, or something like that. Disappointed.”

“Coffee is good, but service was slow and messy. We were waiting for a while for our coffees, while people who just got in got their coffee in a couple of minutes. One of the coffees we ordered was wrong, so more waiting. And at some point they were asking around to check what people ordered because they didn’t know anymore. It needs a better system for service during busy hours. They had a few pastries, with 1 gluten free option.”
