Quick info
About The Independent Cafe
The Independent Cafe is a coffee shop in Oxford at 85-87 St Aldate's, across the street from Christ Church. The drinks list runs to flavoured lattes, including banana and salted coconut versions alongside a cinnamon latte, and oat milk is not charged extra, so dairy-free orders add nothing to the bill. Matcha and a choice of coffees sit on the same list. For food, the counter serves a sausage and egg buttie, toasties and bakery items. Seating suits anyone who wants to sit down with a laptop or grab a drink and go, and tables are sometimes shared.

Customer Review Summary
Lattes anchor the praise, above all the cinnamon latte, which two reviewers call the best they have had or incredible. The caramel iced latte and the banana and salted coconut lattes are also singled out. Close behind is the sausage and egg buttie, described as tasty and a decent size, along with good toasties, a strong chai latte, and a hot chocolate made with coconut milk alongside a cruffin. One reviewer appreciated that oat milk carried no extra charge. Reviewers describe a studenty crowd tapping on keyboards in low tones, with plenty of seating. Some note that tables get shared, queues grow long on busy days, and the windows are often condensed. One reviewer wished for more savoury vegan and veggie choices beyond toasties. The sharpest complaints concern rules. One reviewer ran into a Sunday afternoon no-laptop policy with no signage, and another, who had bought a tea, was told to buy another item or leave after stepping outside briefly.

“Really disappointing experience. Apparently this café has a no-laptop policy between 12–4pm on Sundays, despite there being absolutely no signage anywhere to make customers aware of it. What makes it even more ridiculous is that plenty of people were sitting around glued to their phones, yet somehow using a laptop is where they draw the line. I’m struggling to see the logic. If you’re going to enforce a policy like this, the absolute minimum you can do is clearly advertise it before customers sit down and spend their money. It’s incredibly frustrating to find out about an arbitrary rule only after you’ve settled in. Completely unnecessary and poorly communicated. I certainly won’t be rushing back.”

“Great lunch stop on our walking tour of Oxford. It’s so inspiring sitting amongst scholars tapping away on their keyboards, drinking fine coffee and conversing in low tones. The sausage and egg battie was so tasty and good quality. Toastie menu was good too. Highlight was the coffee of which I had two. Flavour was bang on. Loved it here for my Oxford experience and this would be a local if I ever lived here.”

“Likely the best lattes I've ever had. Highlights for the Banana and the salted coconut ones. Awesome baristas.”

“Gorgeous view and cozy decor. Plenty of seating, which is good because it seemed like a popular spot for meetings and studying. Appreciated that they didn't charge extra for oat milk. Incredible cinnamon latte!!”

“Walked into this cafe randomly and got the best cinnamon latte I’ve ever had with a very reasonable price. There are many choices of coffee and matcha you can choose from. Bakeries are also available. There are seats to sit and work or you can just grab & go.”
