Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the setting: a narrow alley entrance, low ceilings and wooden beams, and a large courtyard with covered benches. Beer comes close behind, with praise for the variety of ales and lagers and a flight of three ales. Food divides opinion. Fans single out the Scotch egg, the Turf Tavern Sharer, fish and chips, a duck hash and a steak pie with mash. Others call the Sunday roast the worst they have had, citing a burnt, rock-hard Yorkshire pudding, parsnips overcooked outside and underdone inside, and terrible cauliflower cheese. Another reviewer found the chicken and beef steak bland. A few were disappointed that hake and a steak and cheese toastie were unavailable, and the wine choice drew mild criticism. Service is mixed. Servers are called polite and friendly, yet one reviewer found tables uncleaned and no guidance on ordering through the app or at the bar. Even so, one reviewer's parting note is to watch your head inside.

“The beer was really good, and the pub has a fantastic atmosphere. I loved the decoration and the historic charm of the place. Unfortunately, the service was very disappointing. The tables were not cleaned, and the staff provided no guidance or information about how things worked or where to order. We were left to figure everything out ourselves. It’s a shame because the pub has so much character and potential, but the lack of attention to customers really affected our experience. Great beer and a lovely setting, but the service definitely needs improvement.”

“A visit to Oxford wouldn't feel complete without stopping at a traditional pub, and the Turf Tavern certainly delivers on atmosphere and history. Tucked away and brimming with character, this Greene King pub has strong ties to Oxford's student past. The front bar is charmingly rustic, complete with low ceilings and wooden beams that seem determined to catch out taller visitors. Sitting with a drink and watching people misjudge the beam height proved surprisingly entertaining! There's plenty of seating both inside and outside, with a large courtyard featuring plenty of benches and covered areas. The menu offers all the pub classics you'd expect, from fish and chips to Scotch eggs, pork pies, and sausage rolls. The drinks range is solid, with a good choice of ales and lagers, plus a beer flight of three ales from the daily selection. The staff were friendly and efficient, helping create a lively and welcoming atmosphere. My only criticism would be the pricing. £18 for a pint and a glass of wine felt steep, especially when the wine itself was nothing particularly memorable. Still, for the history and atmosphere alone, the Turf Tavern deserves a place on any Oxford itinerary.”

“While in Oxford, a must visit! Lovely choice of beers - the variety is commendable. The place has had famous people grace its premises but that is hardly the calling card - it has been for long, a narrow alley entrance that makes the overall visit fun. Watch your head when inside!”

“Everything at this Tavern is amazing. The atmosphere is beautiful and the food was incredible. I personally liked the Turf Tavern Sharer. The scotch egg was sooo good and the pickle was perfect. Also, the ciabatta and the olive oil balsamic vinegar mix was one of the best I've ever had. We've also ordered Fish and chips, Shortcrust Pie, sausage and mash, the sea bream, mussels & chrorizo and they were all incredible good! The servers were very nice as well. We had to order through their app, but they made sure we were taken care of. All in all, this was one of the best food I've had in Europe thus far. ☺️”

“This is a great pub with a large garden area for seating. The beer selections were really good. If you order food, you can use the QR code (you have to download the app), or you could ask the server at the bar to take your order. I had the steak pie with rachlette, mash, veg and gravy. It was pretty heavy so I couldn't quite finish it... but it was tasty.”
