About St Aldates Tavern

St Aldates Tavern is a Victorian pub in Oxford on St Aldate's, with monthly movie nights and stand-up comedy alongside a buffet menu. A large beer barrel stands at the entrance, and old furniture fills the traditional bar. Cask ales are on offer, and the team gives samples to help you choose. The kitchen cooks fish and chips, roast dinners and a burger served with chips. Sport plays on the TVs, and an upstairs seating area gives groups more room to settle in. Dogs are welcome inside, so regulars can bring them along.

Customer Review Summary

Slow service is the recurring complaint. Sandwiches took a long wait to arrive on quiet afternoons, and one reviewer who got a sandwich that fell apart had to eat it with a knife and fork and received no apology. A large group after a race found missing chairs, a long wait for drinks, and a roast dinner that went cold while the gravy was requested repeatedly. Some cask ales and lunch items were out, and the pub can get noisy. Even so, a waiter who ran outside to return a forgotten backpack stands out.

“We went as a large group after the Oxford Half Marathon. I booked a table in advance but when we arrived we were missing 4 chairs and it felt a bit disorganised. The upstairs was packed and there were only one or two waiting staff. You could sense the stress the staff were feeling which was uncomfortable. We had a very long wait to order drinks. When our food arrived one of the roast dinners was missing gravy, we asked the waiter for some several times and they kept forgetting. Eventually we asked the other waitress who said she would do it in a minute- the roast was cold by the time the gravy arrived. The menu said the roasts would come with horseradish and apple sauce too which we didn’t get and we decided against asking for it as we had had such difficulty getting anything else we asked for and felt uncomfortable asking for things as the staff were so stressed. The food itself was very nice but it was somewhat ruined by the atmosphere and service. You would have thought the manager may have planned ahead knowing there was a big event on and large bookings.”

“The hamburger wasn't bad, it was just average, and the size of the portion was quite underwealming. The service was quite bad, because we did not get a clean tabke, nor did we get the menu cards handed to us.”

“I popped into Aldates Tavern this afternoon needing food but having zero expectations. Surprise! I received fabulous service and was quickly served a true and delicious burger. It was cooked to perfection, juicy and with just the right amount of toppings. The chips were fresh, hot, and crispy on the outside. Since I'm allergic to tomatoes, I was served tartar sauce for my fries (my request). They even helped me with my beer choice since I twice tried to order one that was hoppy after I'd said I didn't care for IPAs. I was a bit hangry. I'd strongly recommend the burger! And the Aldates Tavern.”

“I waited 40 minutes for this. I don’t take it personally as the table before me waited just as long for their sandwiches. They are just slow as I can’t imagine how complicated making a sandwich can be. It’s a pub, meant for socializing. If you are by yourself and want to try some local pub scene, this is not the place for you. The wait will feel even longer. The people working there are nice though. Some patron forgot his backpack, the waiter run out to catch him. I stopped by m&s to grab some salad to balance out the deep fried fish.”
