Quick info
About The Balti House
The Balti House is a family-run Indian restaurant on Heathcoat St in Hockley, Nottingham, where the owner and his family act as hosts. The menu lists 52 dishes, with balti and Madras dishes and Chicken Jalfrazi among the mains, plus tandoori dishes and sharing platters. Spice levels can be adjusted to taste, and a Naga challenge gives anyone who wants very hot dishes something to take on. Seekh Kebab is one of the starters. The naan is made fresh in a clay oven, and the selection includes a Peshwari naan with honey and coconut paste. Vegan and vegetarian diners have plenty of options to choose from. Popadoms come to the table while guests wait for their food, and the restaurant has a glass front.

Customer Review Summary
Puri starters draw the most mentions, with diners praising a huge chicken puri of fluffy bread and well spiced chicken, plus a prawn puri and a veg puree that left one reviewer half full before the main arrived. Close behind are the curries, notably creamy jalfrazi, a paneer jalfrazi with a thick sauce, and a rogan josh one reviewer called authentic compared with places that use food colouring. Reviewers also single out the naan, including a honey and coconut Peshwari and a kema naan with just the right amount of spice, while one describes a patro chicken as something different that can be spiced to taste. Curries are called flavourful rather than very spicy, with a Naga challenge for those wanting heat. Vegetarian and vegan options earn praise too. The owner and staff are repeatedly described as friendly and welcoming. The one criticism is that the pickle tray left a little to be desired, though that reviewer found the mains superb. Portions are generous, and one group noted they did not leave hungry.

“Had a fantastic paneer jalfrazi. Beautiful thick sauce. The vegan menu is fantastic too, with lots of options. For 3 people, we had 2 bottles of prosecco, 3 starters, 3 mains with naan and rice, plus 3 liquers and the bill was £102. Amazing value. I will be back. Soon. BTW, the service was impeccable 👌”

“Most people don’t know you can get a Balti meal deal there for £10.90 on Mondays and Tuesdays! You get a starter and a main with rice or naan included, definitely worth it. With extras like lassis, an extra starter to share like the made fresh pani puri, extra naan made fresh in the clay oven, the whole meal was still only £33. Served by the son of the founder, who has been there for 40 of their 56 year history. Very nice curry house experience, they’re not making restaurants like these anymore, especially not in Hockley in city center! Very special, not fancy, good value, good food, great service, always open.”

“The pickle tray left a little to be desired but the main courses were superb. Great interaction from the colleagues working as well.”

“It's the best Indian food we've found in Nottingham. Balti and Madras were both good sized portions, delicious with the chicken nice and tender. Naan bread was amazing and also a good sized portion, we did not leave hungry. The people working there were very friendly and welcoming, and the service was fast. Easy 5 stars.”

“The only regretful thing I could think of is not knowing this place earlier despite living in the Nottingham for 8 years! Lovely family run curry house with not-that-spicy but definitely flavourful curry (You can go for the Naga challenge if you want to have really spicy stuff). We had Prawn Puri and Platter Vegetable as starters, Creamy Jalfraji and Creamy Roganjosh as mains. What impressed me was the selection of available nan, especially the Peshwari Nan (Honey and Coconut Paste Nan) which simply blown my mind off - best carb to pair with for those who loves sweet stuff. The owner, Sam, is friendly and surely knows his dishes well enough to accomodate to customers with different dietary requirements. Will definiltey go again just to try other dishes.”
