Quick info
About Low Lights Tavern
Low Lights Tavern is a pub on North Shields Fish Quay at 5 Brewhouse Bank, where the homemade pies come in several fillings, including curried chickpea. Pies arrive with mash or chips, mushy peas and gravy, and an apple pie is served for dessert. Burgers round out the menu, with a Cajun burger among them, and Sunday dinner is served. At the bar, about five cask ales sit alongside around ten kegged beers. Inside is a small room with an old-fashioned pub feel, with artwork for sale on the walls and Sam Fender's Brit award displayed behind the bar. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return to Low Lights Tavern above all for the homemade pies, praised for light pastry and generous flavour. Diners name the corned beef pie with its gravy, the curried chickpea, steak and ale with mushy peas and mash, steak and mature cheddar, and chicken, leek and ham. One reviewer calls the apple pie the best they have had, and another praises the chips and mushy peas. Close behind is the welcome, with several describing friendly, warm service. The drink side draws comment too, with cask ales and a kegged range noted alongside pints enjoyed outside in the sun. The Cajun burger gets a good word, though one burger eater wished they had ordered the pie instead. The one recurring caution is space, as reviewers call the pub small for how popular it is and expect it to be busy. One Sunday visitor left a pint-only visit envying neighbouring plates of Sunday dinner, and some mention artwork on the walls and a Brit award behind the bar.

“Great hosts. A warm welcome greets you and offer good quality homemade food. I had one of their pies with superb gravy. I am a visitor from the South East where they could learn a lot from this pub.”

“We tried the Low Light Tavern just up from North Shields Quayside. It's been there for a very long time and it's authenticity hasn't been spoilt by modernisation and insipid pastels. It retains all the character and cosiness of an old fashioned pub. Even better it serves lovely pies. We all tried a different one and they were delicious. We were so full we couldn't fit in desert but will try it next time. The staff were very friendly and made sure we felt welcome. 🤗❤️”

“I have been meaning to come to the Low lights tavern for ages after hearing good reviews… this did not disappoint. Lovely friendly welcome from the guy that found us a table and took our order. The home made pie and mash was excellent! I had Steak and mature cheddar and my partner had chicken, leek and ham. Both were excellent. It may have taken me ages to go, I will be back much faster.”

“We knew this place was great for food but we just hadn't got round to going. We had my sister in law and her husband staying so we thought we'd take them. What a wonderful decision, the whole evening was an outstanding experience. Friendly, welcoming greeting and service continued to be the best you could wish for. I knew they were famous for their pies and I thought I wouldn't be able to eat a whole one, but I could as the pastry is so light and delicious. It was heavenly!!. Every part of the meal was cooked to perfection. I am a fussy food teacher and that is the best pie I have ever eaten. I had the curried chickpea and I could eat it over and over again. Chips unbelievably delicious. Mushy peas are my favourite and these were just sublime. All of the drinks were excellent. We will be back soon. Thank you”

“Great little pub. too little for how popular it is. I went in for a pint on a Sunday and will certainly be back for the Sunday dinner having envious LY stared it my peers' dishes. Portions looked good and smelled amazing. Well worth a visit if your in the area. Great artwork on the walls for sale, and Sam Fender's Brit award is behind the bar if you're interested.”
