About Bealim House

Bealim House is a pub in Newcastle Upon Tyne with a gin distillery on site, and the distillery is on show to anyone drinking there. The building was once a printworks. The gin is distilled in house, with maple syrup and cinnamon among the flavours. A gin tasting experience of about 2 hours pairs local Newcastle gins with a welcome drink. The kitchen serves tapas and classic pub dishes, including gluten free fish & chips, and dietary options are clearly marked on the menu. Wylam Brewery beers sit alongside other local beers, including Hickey the Rake. Sunday lunch comes with pork or chicken and extra Yorkshire pudding. The pub takes walk-ins. The upstairs area can be hired for private parties such as birthdays and engagement parties, with buffet food available, and guests can bring their own music and decorations.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers come back most for the gin distilled on site, from a two hour tasting of four local Newcastle gins to the house maple syrup and cinnamon gin, which one drinker says tasted just like it sounds. Close behind are the local beers, poured at a relaxed bar with the distillery on show and friendly, fast service. Sunday lunch also earns praise, with a big cut of pork, crisp crackling, an extra Yorkshire pudding, chicken, and fish goujon starters, and one diner suggests booking a table. Groups who hired the upstairs room describe a cosy, rustic space, hot beef sandwiches and roast potatoes, their own music, and outside food and cakes allowed. The complaints are small but specific. One booked table by the door turned drafty and cold until staff moved the diners, and one reviewer felt food was the only thing missing, while another wanted nibbles included with the gin tasting. One diner with clearly marked dietary options ate gluten free fish and chips out for the first time in ten years.

“Recently celebrated a triple birthday at Bealim house, this was done with the use of the upstairs area. Have to say what an amazing experience it was! Venue is beautiful but is done justice by the incredible staff, especially Andrew, the bar staff were constantly asking who needed a drink and Andrew was on top of filling up all the snacks while giving credit to the lovely host of our party who provided the snacks. In my group who specifically attended together, we are all girls in our early 20s and Andrew made us feel especially welcome by greeting us in and even taking our photo for us when he saw us struggling. Unsure if the dj was booked through the venue or by my friends mam who was the host but he was amazing aswell letting everyone request songs all night and interacting with all of the guests. Sometimes it’s hard to not feel discriminated against when your a younger group but definitely didn’t feel that in bealim house and will be returning, even without booking an event, to the general downstairs area as that also looked amazing. Massive thank you to Andrew and the team for making our night !”

“Great Gin tasting experience with Olly. Tasted 4 local Newcastle gins plus a welcome drink. A great 2 hour experience. Totally changed my opinion on dry gin… it’s all about the mixer or maybe it’s Newcastle gin that’s the best! . Highly recommend. Thanks. I would love to see nibbles/snack included in future. All staff very friendly.”

“Nice little pub in Newcastle. Good selection of beers, had the Wylam’s Hickey the Rake. Very refreshing with a citrus zing! 🍻 They also have a good selection of Gin, including their own inventions. We tried the maple syrup and cinnamon. Tasted just like it sounds. Good fun! 🍹 Only thing missing is food ☹️”

“Absolutely brilliant spot! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm, lively and perfect for a relaxed afternoon session. The beer selection was superb, featuring delicious local brews from Wylam Brewery. The gin game here is next level too — we tried their locally crafted Newcastle gin, and it was smooth, aromatic and beautifully served. Service was friendly and attentive, and the whole venue has such a great vibe”

“We hired the upstairs area for an engagement party & it was perfect. Sarah from the events team was fantastic and answered my constant questions and queries, communication was great. The team on the night working the event were so friendly, nothing was too much trouble and were always on hand to help all were so accommodating. We would 100% recommend the venue for a party. The atmosphere of the venue is cosy and rustic and worked so so well. We were able to have our own music playing at any volume and decorate the room as we wished. We opted for hot beef sandwiches and roast potatoes for the buffet which were so nice and we were able to bring additional food/ cakes etc which we struggled to find a venue that allowed external catering initially! Genuinely couldn’t have had a better experience so thanks to all staff. We will definitely consider hosting a party here in the future 😊”
