About Cog and Wheel

On Sandyford Rd in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Cog and Wheel is a bar and grill and a pub with rooms upstairs, so overnight guests check in at the pub itself. The kitchen serves chips with "cog dust" and a Sunday roast that includes a veggie option. The drinks list covers beers, spirits and cocktails, including the Dead Man's Daiquiri. A bottomless brunch runs for 2 hours, which gives groups of friends a long, unhurried slot to settle into. The pub is walk-in, with no reservations. Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most for the Sunday roast, with the chicken roast described as really well cooked with generous portions and one diner calling it among the best Sunday dinners they have had. The sticky toffee pudding gets praise as rich, and the chips with cog dust and the Classic Cog & Wheel are singled out as filling and good value. The Dead man's Daiquiri is called refreshing and fruity, and the staff are repeatedly described as friendly and great. Several mention the prices as reasonable, and one enjoyed the sunny beer garden. The complaints are specific. One roast diner found the Yorkshires all burnt and felt like a bother when asking for the bill. A bottomless brunch guest called the cocktails premixed, the chicken waffle burnt and the food limited, with long waits for menus and orders. A Morning Cloud pop up visitor described a long wait, a mixed up order and weak, watery matcha after the cinnamon rolls had run out. Another pop up visitor recalled a staff member carrying their drink up the road when the cup holders ran out.

“Went to the morning cloud pop up and a member of staff helped carry my drink up the road because they ran out of cup holders! 10/10 service and the drinks were equally as fantastic.”

“TLDR: waited nearly 45 minutes for overpriced watery matcha, would not return 👍 I’ve been seeing TikToks about the Morning Cloud pop up at cog and wheel for months now, saving them and sending them to friends, itching to go to one of their “Beats n Buns” events with scran on the tyne. I LOVE matcha, I LOVE cinnamon rolls, and I’ve been looking forward to this for weeks!! We arrived at 11.40 and they’d ran out of cinnamon rolls - sad but understandable, just get here early if you want one. We got a little pastry donut muffin thing instead that was still really nice! Nothing but good things to say about scran on the tyne, just wish they had more stock. The matcha though…. Oof. We were told there would be a 15 minute wait, which again, is understandable, so we ordered and waited. Good matcha always takes a little longer than your standard iced drink. Cut to 40 minutes later (Forty!!!!! Minutes!!!!! For 2 drinks!!!!!) and a woman comes out with 3 drinks for us - it’s the wrong order, lmao. Turns out there were two of our order numbers for some reason. Another few minutes later and our drinks finally arrive, and I really thought that they’d be worth the wait at £6.95 each, but that was one of the most disappointing matchas I’ve ever had. I’m not even a real matcha snob, like I can enjoy the cheap stuff, but this was so weak and watery and just tasted like syrupy milk (or in my friends case, “cinnamon water”). To be fair, the syrup in mine was nice, but that’s about as generous I can be. I think waiting that amount of time for an item of such disappointment quality is just insane. They were fairly busy but no more than a typical cafe on a sunny Saturday morning, so idk. Would not bother, would not recommend!”

“Nice pub with friendly staff. The beer garden gets a lot of sun, although there are parasols if it gets too toasty. I didn't try the food, just a drink while I waited to check in to my room upstairs, but lounging in the garden was a thoroughly pleasant experience.”

“I come here quite often and it’s easily one of my favourite places. Had the chicken roast on this visit and it was excellent – really well cooked, generous portions and full of flavour. Everything on the plate was spot on, and it’s exactly what you want from a proper roast. Finished with the sticky toffee pudding, which was rich, indulgent and really lovely. Dom in the kitchen did a great job, and all the staff are consistently friendly and welcoming, which makes a big difference. The prices are better than reasonable for the quality and portion size. Always a reliable place for a really good meal.”
