About The Royal Oak
The Royal Oak is a 17th century pub on Oaklands Ln, on the edge of Midhurst. The grounds hold a marquee for weddings, and each summer the pub runs a festival with live music and a retro and classic vehicle meet. In the kitchen, the menu changes daily and draws on local and seasonal ingredients, and the team caters for all dietary requirements. Roast dinners come with vegetables served on the side, and a three course set menu runs at Christmas. Inside, a log burner heats the pub through winter, and a number of large tables sit alongside smaller ones, so groups and couples both have a place. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the food, with the roast dinner, the Christmas three course set menu, the Mezze Board, chicken Milanese and duck all praised as delicious, and the veg served alongside the roast, especially the cauliflower and leek cheese, getting a specific mention. Close behind come the friendly, accommodating staff and the large garden, with several also liking the varied seating and the space. A wedding party describes a decorated marquee and plentiful food, while others mention a summer festival with live music that felt busy without being crowded. The main caveat is atmosphere: two reviewers found it tepid or lacking on quieter visits, one on a Saturday afternoon and one on a Wednesday evening. One diner also found the tempura haddock only ok, with the fish not fully cooked and the batter slightly oily, though the soup, bread and butter, and mushy peas drew praise. One guest whose drink was spilled over new white trousers says the staff cleaned up quickly and helped her laugh it off.

“We visited on a Saturday afternoon and surprisingly it was quite quiet, I understand that this is not usual, but as a result the atmosphere was a little tepid. The food however was excellent and the service outstanding we would definitely return. Lovely big garden area and a a historic and characterful Pub. Lots of parking and plenty of space.”

“This is a country club, our B$B hostess recommended it. We have the Mezze Board - everything is fresh, too quality and fresh. We’re so glad for our choice. There are different themes seating and spacious outdoor dining areas.”

“Had a lovely time even if my husband did spill his drink all over my brand new white trousers, however the amazing staff team help me laugh it off and cleaned up the mess in no time. After that I enjoyed a beautiful burger that was so filling I couldn’t fit it all in. Such a shame as the deserts coming out of the kitchen looked amazing (my own fault, I shouldn’t have had such a big lunch) before going out in the evening. Franky and the team have things down to a T”

“We booked for one night and enjoyed it so much that we went back again the following night! The food is superb, and thank you to Galyna and Justin for making us feel special and well looked after. Compliments to the whole team! A highly recommended stop if you are in the area.”

“Pub setting is Beautiful from the outside and adds to the welcome experience. We went for a Wednesday 7pm dinner. Two of had a great tasting soup and loved the bread and butter (good attention to detail). Tempura battered haddock was ok. Decent chips, top mushy peas and good tartare sauce. But the fish wasn’t 100% cooked for my liking and the batter was slightly too oily for me. 4 stars. Atmosphere lacked compared to the few places we reviewed in the area this week.”
