About The Hole in the Wall
The Hole in the Wall is a pub and brewpub at 1 St Martin's St in Chichester, down a side street off the high street. The bar pours house-brewed beers alongside local ciders and real ales, with lagers on the list too, and dogs are welcome inside. The kitchen works in gastropub style, with a pub food menu, a few specials and bar snacks for lighter orders. Fish and chips is on the menu. The Sunday roast centres on roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and gravy, and cauliflower cheese can be added as an extra side.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the beer and cider selection, with one praising good lager and yummy bar snacks and dog friendliness. Staff are repeatedly called friendly or lovely. The Sunday roast splits opinion: one calls the beef and gravy the nicest in a long time, while another found one slice of beef, a flat Yorkshire pudding and underwhelming cauliflower cheese. One noted sticky tables.

“Disappointing Sunday roast - the flavours were there, but.... We chose this restaurant for Sunday lunch based on the positive Google reviews and photographs, so our experience was a real disappointment. First, credit where it’s due: the staff were friendly, pleasant and attentive. Our criticism is entirely about the food and the standard of the meal we were served. For a premium priced Sunday roast, the portion, presentation and quality were simply not good enough. We were served just one slice of beef, accompanied by two pieces of carrot, a tiny vegetable that may have been a parsnip, some swede, broccoli, and roast potatoes that were seriously underwhelming. The red cabbage was also disappointing, with an unusual flavour that didn’t complement the meal. And then there was the Yorkshire pudding. I’ve genuinely never seen one so flat and disc shaped. it’s difficult to convey just how disappointing the meal looked without seeing it for yourself, so photos attached. The cauliflower cheese, which we paid extra for, was particularly underwhelming. It had virtually no definition, resembling smashed cauliflower rather than cauliflower cheese, almost like the remnants of the larger dish scraped together to provide a “portion”. What concerned me most was the overall lack of care evident in the food. A Sunday roast should be something a restaurant takes pride in serving. Sadly, this felt like a meal put together with little thought or attention to presentation, quality or value for money. I appreciate that kitchens have busy days and things can occasionally go wrong. However, this was not a meal I would have felt proud to serve to anyone, let alone charge a premium price for. We relied on the Google reviews and photographs when deciding where to eat, and what we received fell a long way short of the impression they gave us. The staff were lovely, but the roast dinner served yesterday, needs a serious rethink. Based on this experience, we wouldn’t rush back.”
