About Shawarma Shop
Shawarma is the centre of the order at Shawarma Shop, a shawarma restaurant on Victoria Rd in Middlesbrough's TS1 area. Chicken and lamb are both available, cooked on a grill behind the counter where the team serves, and the Shawarma Wrap arrives with bread and chips alongside. The food is halal, and it is prepared fresh each day rather than held over. Portions run large and filling. The short menu of four items stretches past the wraps to a Full Roast Chicken, a Breakfast Burrito and Turkish Tea, so a morning visit works as well as a later one. Orders are placed at the counter on a walk-in basis, and the doors open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often return to the chicken shawarma, with one reviewer pairing it with a lamb version and calling both immense. Close behind are the soft, fantastic bread and the chips, described as crispy and done to perfection. Reviewers repeatedly call the shawarma fresh and authentic, with a large portion, a very fresh salad and reasonable pricing, and several rank it the best shawarma in Middlesbrough and the wider Teesside area. Hospitality and customer service are singled out as excellent, and one reviewer mentions halal. A few note the surrounding area isn't the nicest. One reviewer reports food poisoning after two visits, describing chicken served from a stored pot behind the counter, a request for a fresh whole chicken from the grill being ignored, and staff handling food without gloves. That same diner describes a chicken with blackened, sticky skin and broken wings that went straight in the bin. Several other reviewers describe the shop as clean and the chicken as freshly cooked.

“The restaurant is very clean, the food quality is excellent, the staff are professional, the shawarma tastes authentic, and it's one of the best shawarma restaurants in the North Tees area. The bread is fantastic and the staff are very helpful. Thank you for everything you do.”

“I’ve visited this place twice, and unfortunately both times I ended up with food poisoning. Based on my experience, I would strongly advise avoiding the chicken especially if it’s being served from a stored pot behind the counter rather than freshly prepared. On my second visit, I specifically requested a fresh whole chicken from the grill, but my request was ignored. This was very disappointing and concerning given my previous experience. I also noticed poor hygiene practices. Staff were handling food with bare hands, without gloves, and there didn’t seem to be proper hygiene precautions in place. The area behind the counter looked unclean, and I even saw staff wiping sweat with their shirts while working. Overall, the hygiene standards appeared very low. In my opinion, this place would struggle to pass a proper food inspection. Never go back again, I would not recommend eating here. My chicken was black and sticky tar type material all over and both wings were broken skin was brunt . Went into bin straight away once got home.”
