Customer Review Summary

Sunday lunch is the main draw, with reviewers praising the roast beef and the nut roast, the portions, and an Eton Mess with fresh cream and fruit. Close behind are the pies and grills: one diner found more steak than pie in the steak pie, and others name the marinated chicken, sirloin steak, vegetarian lasagne and a hot beef roll with fries. Vegetarian and vegan choices, plus non alcoholic cider and beer, get a mention, and the ale selection is called large. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, and one group says they happily made a small change to a roast. Reviewers also like the decorated interior with a log fire and two large armchairs, a garden, and a welcome for dogs inside and outside. No recurring complaint appears, though one Sunday diner who booked ahead was only offered a table after 2pm because the pub was so busy. Walkers pass through too, with one calling it a lunch stop on a hike to Stanton Moor, and one local says guests were still raving about the food after an anniversary party there.

“Camping locally and went for evening meal. We had the plate steak pie and the marinated chicken. Both meals were delicious and substantial. Unusually for a pub pie, there was more steak than pie and the steak was tender and very tasty. It’s a lovely, quiet pub with a good selection of beers available and friendly staff. We will be returning again when we are next in the area.”

“We had our anniversary party at the Stags because it's our local and we love it. People are still raving about the food (thanks Owen) and our guests had a brilliant time!”

“Went for Sunday lunch having booked in advance and found out the only availability was after 14.00pm, we were quick to find out why it was so busy! The food was fantastic and arrived in good time, the bar staff were super friendly and well behaved dogs are also welcome which helped massively too. The pub itself looked really clean and well represented with a traditional old english pub feel. 10 / 10 recommend this establishment and if not for the fact that we are on holiday, it woulf likely have been my favourite local! Thank you all for great dining experience.”

“Had the Sunday roast. 2x large beef and 1 nut roast. The food was delicious and the staff were very accommodating when asking for a small change. Some non alcoholic cider and beer available, which was good for us. We ate inside but there is a lovely garden area available and dogs are allowed inside and outside. We would definitely go again and recommend to others.”
  • Georgina Burrows
“Fantastic pub. The food is incredible, just the right amount of food too. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. Definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area.”
