Customer Review Summary

Beef pho is the dish reviewers return to most, with the beef trio and pho bo tai praised for a rich, beefy broth, visible raw beef in the bowl and a light finish. Close behind is the bun bo hue, described as tangy, lemony and spicy, with a kick from the provided chillis. Spring rolls with a crisp outside, the shredded green mango salad, banh xeo, banh mi, fried squid and summer rolls all draw praise, along with Vietnamese iced coffee. Several describe good value, one notes big portions, and one suggests the beef pho, spring rolls, mango salad, banh mi and iced coffee. Complaints are smaller but specific: the lamb cutlet came out dry and overcooked, the banh cuon did not taste homemade, the prawns lacked sweetness for one diner, and one reviewer wanted more mint and fish sauce. A bottle of beer struck one person as expensive for the area. One diner who thanked the cook at the back of the restaurant received a warm smile.

“Yesterday evening I found myself at 1 of the most fantastic restaurants that you can go to the food absolutely delicious well presented. Well, proportioned, the value of flavours is not understood until you eat here. The service level beautiful, very attentive. And a smile every time i will be making a number of visits to this restaurant as I intend to go through as much of the menu as possible. A place to go to with friends or your partner. Well done a very good 9 out of 10 remember, nobody gets 10 out of 10”

“From the extremely high rating to the number of recommendations I have had to try Eat Vietnam in Deptford, it has garnered a huge rep and it indeed stands as one of the best viet restaurants in London. It is rare to find a solid bun bo hue in London and Eat Vietnam definitely has that fs. Although the broth is clear, it has the perfect kick especially after adding the provided chillis. The broth is very clean while still having a sophisticated enough depth of flavour. I do wish there was more mint provided though. The banh xeo was definitely the highlight of the meal. A rare perfect crisp, lots of filling, a very large pancake paired with a very good fish sauce which completes the dish. Again wish there was a bit more fish sauce as it is the glue that elevates such meals. Finally some solid chicken wings that still retained its crisp even with the sauce after being sat out for some time and a very solid and aesthetically pleasing Vietnamese iced coffee. I will definitely come again to try more dishes especially the grilled foods such as bun thit nuong and see if my rating will be affected by then.”

“Like every review states - the food here is really good and no nonsense, it is definitely one of the best places to eat in Deptford. It is really tasty Vietnamese flavours and all the meat is cooked well, anything you order on the menu will be devoured. Everyone cleared their plates very quickly and I will 100% be back. The only gripe I had and only reason I can’t give it 5* was that it was £6.50 for a 330ml bottle of beer which seems really expensive in Deptford….”

“Thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Eat Vietnam, phoned in to enquire and the phone was answered promptly, gent on the phone advised to book as Saturday night. On arrival, was met by a warm lady who seated us and even offered to move us if we wanted. The menu was rich of choice, full of items I've not tried before, but I came for the Phở, I'm on a mission to find the best broth and Eat Vietnam did not disappoint. I went for the beef trio option, rich beefy notes, packed with flavour but thin and with a lightness that kept in character with the task at hand. Good amount of meat and each type of beef impressed. Simply excellent. The young girl who served us had a stern look about her and didn't mess about when she took your order, you'd almost think she was annoyed, but this didn't annoy me, it just felt, like everything else in the restaurant, abundantly authentic. At the back of the restaurant was an elderly lady with a forbidding look on her face sat a table, watching and judging everything going on, I noticed many of the plates coming out of the kitchen being put in front of her momentarily, seemingly for approval. I was too engrossed with my food to see the reaction, but I imagine she gave a curt nod of approval before it was sent out for service. I enjoyed her presence. Back to the food, despite me ordering Phở first, along with some spring rolls, and later accosting the waitress to add on a green mango salad, the salad and spring rolls came out first. I worried that everything would come out together or Phở first then appetisers / sides later. I'm very glad they organised my order in this way, and it added to the good service received in general. The Shredded green mango salad was very very good, the mango just at the correct ripeness to compliment the rest of the salad elements. Presentation was very good and the dish was very refreshing and light but packed with flavour. 10/10. The Spring Rolls, best I've had hands down. delicious flavour, a nice outside crisp, and a lovely prawny aftertaste. 10/10. The only criticism came from my wife, she's a shellfish and seafood aficionado, and is constantly going on about the sweetness of shellfish, apparently the prawns weren't as sweet as she'd have liked, I found them to have a nice meaty flavour, maybe not as 'sweet' as other prawns but I guess that's down to where they're from, breed, size etc. What I will say is that the Tiger Prawn Phở broth was absolutely delicious, quite a bit different from the rich beef broth, I ordered, the beefiness still definitely present, but the flavour was definitely different and enjoyable, not too fishy, just simply delightful. When the bill arrived, I asked if the lady at the table at the back was the owner, but was told she was in fact in charge of the recipe's and that the owner was the well mannered and spoken gentlemen who was taking phone calls who booked us in. After paying, and before I left, I went over to the lady on the table and told her that her food was excellent, the strict look dropped from her face and I received a warm smile and thanks. My wife told me she stood up as we left to say thanks again. I clearly had a good time, and I'm sat here on a Monday morning daydreaming about the great experience I had on Saturday night. Eat Vietnam Deptford makes my go to Sông Quê Café in Dalston irrelevant. Can't wait to go back and try some of the other items!”
