Quick info
About Thai Square
Thai Square is a Thai restaurant at 148 Strand in London, the first restaurant under the Thai Square name, and it has operated at this address since 1996. The dining area is larger than the street front suggests, and a lower level hosts private events and group functions. The menu covers both meat and vegetarian dishes, with spicy curries and stir-fries alongside vegetable curry and pad thai with tofu. A set lunch menu includes Pad Krapao and chicken satay. Reservations are required. The restaurant sits close to Somerset House and the theatres, which makes it a fit for a meal before or after a show.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise authentic, well-balanced Thai flavours, with vegetarian dishes a frequent highlight. One diner enjoyed a vegetable curry while a companion had the pad thai with tofu, and the pair noted plenty for both meat eaters and vegetarians. Close behind is the set lunch, where one reviewer ordered the Pad Krapao with chicken satay and called the satay tender with a great sauce. Several describe the staff as friendly and attentive, and a few mention the large interior, the warm atmosphere and the convenience before or after a night at the theatre. Not everyone is won over. One reviewer found the food fine but not memorable, with small portions for the price and a dimly lit dining room. Another says service was slow because the restaurant was understaffed, making it hard to get a waiter's attention when ordering and paying, though they felt the food made up for it. Another reviewer, by contrast, says they were fed very quickly.

“Thai Square was decent overall — the food was fine, but nothing particularly memorable. To be fair, the portions were a bit small for the price, and it felt quite expensive for what you get. Expect to spend £30+ per person. The restaurant is also quite dimly lit inside, which creates a certain atmosphere but isn’t ideal if you want to take good photos. Overall, an okay experience, but not particularly good value for money.”

“The best set lunch menu in the Strand. The small lady waitress was very friendly and welcoming. I ordered the Pad Krapao and added chicken satay — such great value. The food was absolutely delicious, full of flavour, and perfectly cooked. The satay was tender and the sauce was amazing. I would definitely give it 10/10 and will be coming back again!”

“During our official visit to London, my colleague and I were craving authentic Thai food after a few days of enjoying other cuisines. Staying near St. Paul’s, we decided to take a pleasant 20-minute evening walk in the beautiful London weather to try Thai Square, and it turned out to be a wonderful choice. The restaurant is much larger than we expected, with a spacious dining area and even a lower level for private events or group functions. Although it was a weekday and not particularly busy, the peaceful atmosphere made for a very relaxed dining experience. The food was excellent. I enjoyed a delicious vegetarian Thai meal, while my colleague had one of the non-vegetarian specialties, and we were both impressed with the quality, freshness, and authentic flavours. The service was warm and attentive, despite there being only a few staff members on duty. If you’re in London and love Thai cuisine, Thai Square is definitely worth a visit. Great ambience, delicious food, friendly service, and a lovely overall experience. Highly recommended! Five out of five!”

“A friend and I ended up going here as an impromptu decision after seeing an art exhibit at Somerset House. It ended up being a genuinely wonderful choice. The restaurant is significantly larger than it looks from the outside, and despite some dusty windows, the interior is incredibly clean and well-tended. Whether you're interested in meaty dishes or vegetarian food, this place has plenty for both of you (a rarity sometimes). I had a wonderful vegetable curry, and my friend had the pad thai with tofu. Both of us left incredibly happy, and we were fed very quickly, which was another real plus.”

“Absolutely beautiful dinner last night at the Thai square. The atmosphere and the returns are all beautiful. The staff were really attentive too. Will defiantly come back. I love Thai food and this was up there with one of the best I’ve eaten at.”

Highlights
“Thai Square has been a staple on the Strand since 1996. It was the very first Thai Square restaurant to open its doors, so it has an extra special place in our hearts. Conveniently located on the Strand, a major thoroughfare in Central London, our restaurant offers the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.”
