About Polka Kitchen

Polka Kitchen is a Polish restaurant and cocktail bar at Unit 25 Dickens Yard in London, operating under its current name after previously trading as Sowa Restaurant. Regulars of the old restaurant will find the same site with a new name. The kitchen prepares traditional Polish dishes daily, including homemade pierogi filled with goat cheese or served as potato dumplings with squash. Duck dumplings and a breaded pork cutlet with potato purée or fried cabbage and spicy sausage sit alongside them. The day starts with breakfast, and the patisserie side covers desserts and coffee. The bar pours cocktails with a Happy Hour every day, and craft beers are on offer too. Polish products and souvenirs are on sale to take home.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the breaded pork cutlet. One reviewer can't stop thinking about it and its fried cabbage with spicy sausage, while another found it well cooked but not outstanding. Close behind are the homemade pierogi, described as fresh and soft, along with dumplings with goat cheese, potato dumplings with squash, and a Steak Tartare one reviewer ranks among the best they have had. Desserts, including Black Forest cake, and the craft beers also draw praise, and many describe friendly, welcoming staff and a cosy atmosphere. The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the panko chicken over-salted and plain, and noted the pierogi portion shrinking while the price stayed the same. Another thought the duck dumpling filling resembled canned tuna. A takeaway żurek arrived without kielbasa or bread and tasted to one reviewer like ogórkowa. A couple of reviewers add that Polish souvenirs and products can be bought to take home.

“Breaks my heart writing this as my mother is a super-fan of this restaurant and comes here every fortnight. But honestly? Unimpressed. The service was mostly impeccable (bar the occasional forgetfulness) which is why I struggle to rate it any lower. My mother shrewdly pointed out the extent of shrinkflation: with the pierogi portion size shrinking but price staying the same. But my issue was with the panko chicken, which — while cleverly and pleasantly presented — was poorly seasoned and over-salted. I could not finish my meal as it was too salty. The protein itself was so plain, and perhaps a little overcooked. I would not come here again personally, but my mother certainly will.”

“£9 for this takeaway pot of żurek without any kielbasa or bread on the side. Tastes like straight ogórkowa somehow. I knew this place is bad but with Lubczyk being closed I was desperate for some good polish soup. Still looking for a fix”

“My first time visiting Polka Kitchen. The food was beautifully presented and tasted every bit as good as it looked. You can tell a lot of care goes into both the ingredients and the attention to detail. The atmosphere was welcoming, the service was on point. I will definitely be returning. The Steak Tartare was one of the best that I have ever had and I have had a lot of Steak Tartares! Highly Recommend!”
