About Mealtime Malatang
Mealtime Malatang is a Sichuan restaurant in London, at 34 Goodge St near UCL. The format is self-serve: diners pick their own meat, vegetables and other ingredients, then weigh them at the cashier. The staff cook the selection and serve it in a chosen soup base, with a choice that includes Guizhou red sour soup. Each person gets an individual mini hot pot, or two people can share one and order rice. Toppings include fish balls and fried beancurd roll, and a dry mala mix is offered as an alternative to the broth. The brand started in Shanghai and runs more than 50 stores around the world. The restaurant is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the Guizhou red sour soup base, describing it as tangy, warming and comforting on a cold day, with fish balls and noodles soaking up the golden broth. Close behind are the Sacha base, praised for its heartiness and flavour, and the tom yum, called vibrant and rich. Diners like picking their own ingredients and weighing them at the cashier, and they name prawns, fish balls, seaweed dried tofu and fried beancurd roll as standouts. One reviewer enjoyed the dry mala mix with its slightly sticky sauce. Several note that each person gets a mini pot, which suits solo meals or sharing between two. Reviewers also describe the place as clean and good value for central London, though one calls it solid rather than mind-blowing. No recurring complaints appear. Several say they plan to return, and one wants to come weekly after pairing the tom yum with a sparkling peach soda.

“There are lots of options for both meat and vegetables; how it works is you pick all the food that you want and weigh it at the cashier. The staff will then cook it and serve it to you with your soup base choice 🤩 The Sacha soup base was SO GOOD; 100% recommend 💯 the soup was so flavourful and probably the highlight of the meal 😋 All the food was amazing but the seaweed dried tofu and fried beancurd roll was exceptional soaking the soup 🤤 TIPS: You can have your own mini hotpot or you can share a mini hotpot between two and order rice 🍚”

“A solid spot for malatang in London — and trust me, good malatang in this city is hard to find. I went for the spicy broth, loaded up on fish balls and veggies, and left genuinely satisfied. The ingredients are fresh, the broth has real depth and the right level of heat, and the self-serve format makes it fun to customise your own bowl. With a drink it came to around £15 which is great value for central London. Won’t blow your mind but will absolutely hit the spot when you’re craving something warm, spicy and comforting. Will be back.”

“Mealtime!!I’m obsessed with this tom yum hot pot — the broth is so vibrant and packed with umami, and I love that it’s loaded with lean protein (chicken, mushrooms, tofu) and fresh veggies, making it the perfect guilt-free meal for my fitness journey. The tangy, spicy, and slightly sour broth hits every craving without weighing me down, and pairing it with a sparkling peach soda made the whole meal feel so light and refreshing. The bright, minimalist cafe vibe is chef’s kiss for casual lunches, and the service was quick and friendly. 10/10 for satisfying my spicy food cravings while staying on track with my goals. Will definitely be back weekly! 💪🍲”
