About German Gymnasium
German Gymnasium is a German restaurant in London, at 1 King's Blvd in front of St Pancras station near King's Cross. It occupies a Grade II-listed former gymnasium that was home to London's first indoor Olympics, so diners eat inside a large building with real history in it. The kitchen is led by a Berlin-born chef and cooks from the seasonal produce of regional Germany. Pork knuckle arrives as a main with a beef jus, and the schnitzel list includes a white asparagus version. Beef tartare is offered as a starter. A breakfast and brunch menu runs alongside, with dishes such as salmon and scrambled egg, and the bar pours Flensburger beer. The restaurant is open daily, which suits a meal before a train from the station next door.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the pork knuckle, with one calling the beef jus the finishing touch and another pairing it with a white asparagus schnitzel. Starters such as the beef tartare and salmon earn praise, and so do desserts like the cheesecake and the apple strudel with warm custard. Close behind is the service, described as polite, attentive and friendly, along with perfectly cold beer and a spacious room with outside seating. Schnitzel divides opinion. One reviewer found the chicken in the Sommer Schnitzel a little dry, and another said it lacked the crispness of the German or Austrian original. One reviewer calls the room really cold. Another reports that an East Asian group was seated in a cold, draughty back corner despite open tables elsewhere, and describes the service as off. A third noted that a beer glass wasn't especially clean. One diner who felt water refills went unnoticed says staff brought a jug afterward.

“A quick note for other East Asian diners here: our group, along with other East Asian guests, got seated in a cold, draughty corner at the back even though there were plenty of open tables in the main dining area on Tuesday. I've lived in London for more than two years now and this is honestly the first time I've noticed something that felt like clear segregation in how tables were assigned. Service overall just felt off. When we asked to have the optional service charge removed because of the seating and how we were treated, the staff took it off without even asking why, and didn't say thank you when we paid. Food-wise, the schnitzel was a letdown - nowhere near the crispy texture you'd get from the real thing in Germany or Austria. Between the cold table, the lack of basic hospitality, and mediocre food, this wasn't a good experience. I'd flag this for other diners, obvious, especially East Asian visitors, so you know what to expect.”

“Stopped of for a small beer on the way home, very spacious place with plenty of outside seating for the nice weather and people watching. Staff were friendly and atentive. Clean and well maintained as ypu would expect. If your waiting for a train at King's Cross its worth a stop in.”

“The 3 of us had a pleasant early dinner here. Two of us had the Sommer Schnitzel, the ceaser salad it came with was good and had some lovely big anchovies, however the actual chicken was a little dry. I tried a little of of Kassler with sauerkraut which which was fine too. For desert the Apple strudel was very tasty with a crispy pastry and a warm custard and whilst being very sweet the Black Forest Tart was popular amongst us. However I just felt the food was good without being delicious and the glass my Flensburger beer came in wasn't especially clean.”

“The two person sharing portion was huge and the meat was exceptionally cooked. However, I think four people can share the meat and then order other dishes. Service was good but they don’t notice much when I need water refills. However, they gave me a jug after that so it was good. Mandatory service charge of 20%. Atmosphere, interior design, music and the quality of the food was excellent. Good place to take guests- And super clean washroom too with a very nice hand lotion/handwash.”

“What a brilliant discovery right in front of St Pancras station! Huge building, with a fascinating sporting history. We had the breakfast menu, salmon & scrambled egg and it was a hearty size, with avocado as an extra side. And once again, lots of tea! I love my builder’s tea.”

“At German Gymnasium, we serve London's most authentic German dining experience, from Weisser Spargel (White Asparagus) in May to Ganze Gans (Roast Goose) in Winter. If you think German food is all bratwurst and bierhalls, think again! Our menus are crafted by our Berlin-born Chef Alex Thiel who's committed to bringing the seasonal flavours of regional Germany to London. Housed in a stunning Grade II-listed former gymnasium-home to London's first indoor Olympics-we're the spot for breakfast, biergartens and pre-train feasts.”
