About Charista
Charista is a Bangladeshi restaurant in London at 29 Bethnal Green Road, built around street-food small plates for sharing. The menu lists 41 dishes, with fuchka, jhalmuri and papri chaat among the street snacks, and portions run on the small side. A Charista special chai is served alongside other teas. The Dhooder Cake, a mango milk cake, is made fresh each day, so some may sell out. Lamb biryani and chicken biryani sit on the menu for a heavier plate. The restaurant serves no alcohol.

Customer Review Summary
Lamb and chicken biryani draw the most praise, with one diner calling the lamb version hands down the best dish, with great flavours and not greasy, and another noting the plate looks small but comes with quite a lot. Close behind are the chilli paneer, described as not squeaky or chewy and with a thick chilli sauce, and the lamb kati roll. Papri chaat, masala chips, the shingara plate and mango lassi also get mentions, and the mango milk cake, the Dhooder cake, is called perfectly balanced. Reviewers repeatedly describe the staff as polite, patient and friendly, and the atmosphere as relaxed, warm and cosy. The most common complaint is portion size, with a few saying the plates are small and not a place to fill up. Tea draws mixed views, as two diners found the chai lacking in flavour or just okay. One reviewer found a table slightly sticky, and another felt service was slow on a quiet day. At lunch, one diner found some cakes had not been made yet, and the server apologised.

“i’ve been coming to charista on & off for three years & the service, food, & atmosphere has always been fabulous. my fav item is the papri chaat but friends rave about the biryani. mango lassi & pistachio shake is to die for. it is a hidden gem of shoreditch. & a staple of any trip to bricklane x”

“Great tea, loved the atmosphere. Staff were friendly, service was a little slow considering there weren’t that many customers at the time. But overall cool place for some tea and snacks.”

“Quick bite after work with the girls at Charista, which I was told was a calmer Bengali version of Dishoom. Our friend ordered and we got several dishes to share. The food, was delicious and filling. Chilled atmosphere and lovely, patient waiting staff. £70 for 3 of us. Def worth a try and don't forget to tip .”

“I went here with my Mrs recently for tea and snacks, and it was a really nice experience. Food was fresh and tasty, although portions were a little on the smaller side. Drinks were nice and tasty and altogether the atmosphere was warm and cosy. Also the value for money was good. Will return when back in the area again for sure!”
