Bonners Fish Bar
Quick info
About Bonners Fish Bar
Bonners Fish Bar is a fish and chips takeaway at 144 Northcote Rd in London, with a Banksy artwork above the shop that gives customers a landmark to look for. The kitchen fries cod fresh for its fish and chips, and the chips are cut at home. Mushy peas and curry sauce are the usual extras ordered alongside. A saveloy and a battered sausage sit next to the fish on the menu for anyone who wants something other than fish. Because the food is fried to order, Fridays tend to bring a wait at the counter.

Customer Review Summary
Freshly fried cod in crispy, light batter is what most reviewers come for, alongside home cut chips that one calls consistent and always fresh. Mushy peas and curry sauce are named repeatedly as the add-ons, and the saveloy and battered sausage also earn praise. One longtime regular describes large portions and friendly staff, and another recalls the original family running the shop decades ago. The shop gets busy on Fridays, and one reviewer suggests ordering in advance because everything is made fresh. The complaints are pointed. One reviewer reports watching a large cod come out of the drawer, then receiving two thin, dry pieces that were mostly batter, plus a normal portion of chips after asking for large, and says they felt cheated. Another finds the pricing steep, citing chips with a battered sausage, and says the shop is hardly open. A few reviewers mention the Banksy artwork above the shop.

“Amazing food, the mushy peas, curry sauce, cod and chips, battered Sausage and more I can’t even remember was all phenomenal. Highly recommend the owner was super great and social. Everyone in the neighborhood walked by and said hello and the banksy right above tops everything off perfectly. Looking for Fish and Chips go here.”

“This place is an absolute joke in terms of pricing. You can get a better fish and chips in mother Hubbards for a better price. How you can justify £8 for chips with a sausage in batter is beyond me. They are hardly open and charge the earth. Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere.”

“This is a review from 1979, when I first moved into Warner Road I used to buy sausage and chips from Bonners when it was the orginal family. Always great service and they knew their locals well. Great place and not surprised it’s still going. Wishing the best for the next 45 years. 😀”

“This place is busy on a Friday but it's worth the wait for freshly fried cod. Nice and crispy batter. Saveloy is good too. Card machine wasn't working so take some cash just in case. There is a £10 minimum order for cards but this is understandable given the high transaction charges small businesses have to pay. Support your local chippy, pay a visit today. Update: This chippy now has the added attraction of having some Banksy artwork above it!”
