About Angelina

Angelina is an Asian fusion restaurant at 56 Dalston Ln in London, built around a Japanese and Italian set menu in the Kondate or kaiseki style. Diners sit at the chef's table counter, where they can watch the food being prepared. The menu includes a binchotan course and a lemon pasta with red shrimp, and dishes arrive on ceramic plates. The team explains each dish and wine as it is served. A wine pairing can be added to the set menu, and optional extra courses can be added for those who want a longer meal. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Most reviewers come for the Japanese and Italian set menu, and the wine pairing earns the most praise, with one urging others to get the paired wines. Diners describe courses that link together, singling out the lemon pasta with red shrimp, the antipasti and the binchotan course, while others name the tuna, the lamb and the dessert. Presentation on ceramic dishes and fine glassware draws comment, and several call the room calm and minimal. Service is mostly described as warm and attentive, and one group with vegetarian and pescatarian guests had everything accommodated smoothly. The caveats are specific. One diner found service disjointed, with tap water arriving as sparkling and a red prawn add-on turning out to be part of the pasta dish. The same diner found the mushrooms bland and the veal sando chewy, and questioned the value. Another struggled with a website booking error and a menu card that listed no dishes. Two reviewers loved the counter seats facing the chefs, and one family remembers the Polaroid taken of their table.

“We visited Angelina to celebrate our anniversary and had a lovely experience. Our waiter was warm, welcoming and attentive, making us feel at ease from the moment we arrived. The atmosphere was relaxed yet sophisticated, with a lovely mix of diners, including a slightly more mature crowd, which added to the ambience. The food was excellent! The Japanese-Italian fusion is a wonderful concept, with beautifully executed dishes and an interesting combination of flavours. A really enjoyable evening and a lovely place to celebrate a special occasion. We would happily return!”

“I was quite excited to come here after going to Osteria Angelina but (and I’m not sure if we were just a little unlucky), I wasn’t blown away in the way that I was at Osteria Angelina. In terms of service, we were for some reason served by a waiter and waitress who alternated throughout the meal. We told one that we wanted tap water, and the other brought us sparkling water. This is absolutely fine and never would have been an issue as mistakes happen but she then just stood there and said that she was told that it was sparkling. The man then apologised a minute later and it was all so disjointed and awkward. We were also told that there were two options that were an add on to the set menu if we were hungrier and one of them was red prawns. We hadn’t been told what any of the dishes were at that point (after we ordered drinks) so we of course thought this was a separate dish and asked if we could just get one to taste/share. The waitress said okay and it then turned out that the prawns were an addition to the pasta dish that is in the set menu so it was a little annoying to get one pasta with and one without, considering we thought it was a separate dish. It was strange that the waitress hadn’t explained that to us. They were both very quick and explained all our dishes to us so no complaints there but there honestly wasn’t much warmth and I got the sense that they just didn’t want to be there. In terms of the food, it was definitely good but I wasn’t as blown away as I expected. Some dishes were very good, like the tuna, the lamb and the dessert. Others, however, were a little bland. The sando felt like something we could get at any London market - a really chewy piece of veal with some mustard and parm. The mushrooms in the binchotan dish tasted like boiled mushrooms without a speck of salt and, as someone who loves mushrooms, I was confused at how bland they were. Overall, I think the service definitely impacted our experience but the food also was bland at times. I think Angelina shouldn’t be seen as the original / more elevated version of Osteria Angelina as I think they’re very different and if you like one you still might not like the other. I really wanted to love this but unfortunately I do not think the value for money is there really!”

“One of our best find this London trip! The dishes were creative and you can truly taste the flavours of the food. It is not overwhelmed by sauces or anything like that. We especially loved the lemon pasta with red shrimp. Chef kiss and also their little little starters”

“Loved itttt. It was all the things. Delightful, caring and attentive staff. Andrea was unflappable, super friendly and happy to chat through any of the wines and dishes. Get the paired wines. Sooo good. The head and sous chef are impressive women. Very down to earth and happy to chat. Dishes all linked together so well. Everything was so different. Could not name a favourite and that's rare for a tasting menu. No notes! ❤️”
