Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips, especially cod, is what most reviewers come for, describing fresh fish fried to order in light, crispy, golden batter that is not greasy. Haddock gets similar praise, and one regular says a small cod and chips is more than they can finish. Chips split opinion. Some call them thick, hot and properly salted, while others report undercooked, unpeeled chips, a tiny large portion, and batter still raw in places. Off the fish menu, one group praised burgers and falafel wraps ordered in bulk, while another reviewer found the burger poor, the hot wings small, and objected to being charged for chilli sauce. Several call the staff friendly and helpful, though one visitor found them disgruntled. The cash-only policy draws repeated complaints, with reviewers sent to a distant cash machine, and one gave up and cooked at home. Another diner, sent to the shop next door for cash, took the cod and chips to a nearby park since the bar has no tables.

“I feel like Alan's needs to start taking card. I came today for the first time in years as there so local to me and they still don't accept card payment. I went in for a lazy dinner as normally I would cook or use an app. They said to go to the cash machine which is like abit of a walk next to tesco so in the end by the time I got there I just decided to cook and get something fresh and healthy. I wont bother again if I want a easy take out cause it's abit weird anyway to not take card and cash.”

“£4.70 for a large chips the picture is after we had a few but the portions for a large chips are horrendous never seen a chipshop with a portion that small I’ve been to other shops where a small is double the amount easy. For almost a fiver I expected them to be amazing but I might aswel have bitten a raw potato under cooked some not even peeled. They couldn’t pay me to go back there.”

“Alan Fish Bar used to be a decent local takeaway, especially for doner kebabs and fish & chips. Unfortunately, those days are clearly over. The quality has dropped dramatically while prices have increased to an unreasonable level. I visited recently after a long time and ordered a half-pounder burger and hot wings. The burger was poor in both taste and quality, and the hot wings were shockingly small for the price. Charging premium prices for portions this small is unacceptable and feels like a deliberate attempt to overcharge customers. What made the experience worse was being charged 50p for chilli sauce something most takeaways include for free or at least provide decent quality. The sauce itself tasted unpleasant and added no value whatsoever. This takeaway seems to believe it can charge restaurant-level prices without offering restaurant-level food, service, or portion sizes. It’s not located in a high-end area, and local customers expect fairness and honesty, not inflated pricing and shrinking portions. Even the doner kebab, once a strong point, is now overpriced and disappointing. The overall impression is that this business is prioritising profit over customers and taking advantage of its location. If this continues, they risk losing loyal local customers very quickly. I certainly won’t be returning unless there is a serious improvement in food quality, portion sizes, and pricing.”
