About Roti Chai

Roti Chai is a modern Indian restaurant in London on Portman Mews S, with two distinct dining areas under one roof. Upstairs, a roadside-style cafe serves Indian street food, with pani puri among the snacks. Downstairs, a formal dining room with a bar and lounge handles the restaurant side, where the menu runs to small plates and mains such as Koliwada fish kari. The split gives guests a choice between a casual stop for street food and a sit-down meal in the lower room. The bar downstairs also pours Bombay Bicycle beer.

Customer Review Summary

Chicken lollipops are the dish reviewers name most, with one calling them the best part of the meal. Close behind are the GT Road Chicken sauce, which one diner found addictive, the butter chicken, a chicken curry with hints of coconut cream and cashews, and chicken dumplings. Others praise the chili garlic prawns, a vegetarian biryani made with jackfruit, momos, and butter naan described as crisp outside and soft inside. Reviewers also mention a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere and nice staff, and a few suggest booking for groups, ordering two to three dishes per person, and asking staff for recommendations. Criticism centres on inconsistency. One diner found the garlic prawns lukewarm and the slow cooked lamb in saffron sauce fatty with little meat, and compared the roti to a poppadum. Others say the chaat looked better than it tasted, the masala chai was too sweet, and the chicken portions were small. One table found service slow to start, and another reviewer describes asking for the bill three times before a card machine was put in front of them.

“I have been here more than 3 times, but I always find taste really good. This time we had dinner at the downstairs bar and lounge. We had chicken , north Indian veg thali, mango cheese cake , kofta with coconut chutney and cauliflower dish . They all were really tasty and I was satisfied. The spices were perfect, so everyone can eat it. Customer service was amazing too.”

“Here’s a balanced, decent review: Nice place with a really pleasant atmosphere, definitely one of the highlights. The service was spot on, friendly and attentive throughout. The food was good overall, but nothing particularly stood out or felt memorable enough to come back for. Worth a visit for the vibe and service, but the menu itself didn’t quite impress.”

“The momos were good. We got the chicken curry which was very flavourful with hints of coconut cream cashews and yogurt. Wish there was more chicken in each portion. But the flavour was good. And the butter nan was crisp and soft in the inside.”

“Roti Chai offers an interesting concept with two distinct dining experiences under one roof. Upstairs is geared more towards casual snacks and Indian street food, while downstairs is a more formal restaurant setting. I tried the upstairs menu, and overall it was a pleasant, relaxed experience. The masala chai was decent, but a little too sweet for my taste—good, but not something I’d go out of my way for. The chaat was beautifully presented, which definitely adds to the appeal, though the flavour didn’t quite match the visuals. On the positive side, the chicken dumplings were very nice—probably the standout dish—and the naan bread was fresh and well-made, which is always a good sign. Overall, it’s a great spot if you’re looking for a relaxed place to enjoy some snacks and chai, even if not everything completely stands out in terms of flavour.”
