About Jai Krishna
Jai Krishna is a vegetarian and vegan Indian restaurant in London, at 161 Stroud Green Rd. Ordering works by paper slip: diners write their own choices down and hand the slip to the staff, since the menu items are not numbered. The kitchen cooks dosa, pani puri and dhokla, and the menu offers a large choice of vegan dishes, with any non-vegan options labeled. The restaurant has no alcohol licence, so it runs as BYOB, with a corkage charge for drinks brought in. Payment is cash only, with no card option. Dishes often come out one at a time rather than together.

Customer Review Summary
Diners come for a large, mostly vegan South Indian menu, with dosa, saag and bhel puri singled out by one reviewer, and pani puri, aubergine and an "exotic Thai" dish also earning praise. Fans describe generous portions and a place that is usually packed, and one notes the bring-your-own wine carries only a small corkage charge. Others call it informal, cramped and loud, best with a group sharing plates. The complaints recur, though. Guests are handed a paper slip and must hand-write every item, and several say nobody explained this, leaving them waiting or snapped at over the counter. Cash only catches people out, and one reviewer had to go withdraw money late at night. Several found the food bland or oily, with poppadoms arriving with a spoonful of chutney, dishes landing at different times and some cold. One reviewer's burnt patra was remade drenched in oil and still charged, and another had to insist on checking a four-item bill that had been added up wrong.

“My friend and I had a lovely meal here. The service was personable and attentive without being intrusive or overbearing. Definitely some of the best Indian cuisine I've ever had. Don't sleep on the Aubergine!”

“Rude staff. I was directed to a table. After a while, the worker put a piece of paper on my table. I waited and was confused. So I went to the counter. The worker slammed the counter and said I should have known the paper was for me to write my order and bring it to them. I have been to lots of restaurants and cafes, including hundreds across India and have never come across this system. The rudeness when I didn’t understand it was awful. I recommend to avoid this place”

“.Avoid. where do i even begin. we ordered patra and it arrived burnt. when we flagged it, they remade it — but the second attempt was so drenched in oil it literally burned my hand when i touched it. i told the lady i couldn’t eat it in good conscience and didn’t want to pay for something inedible. her response? “this is how we make it, and we are a business — we need to stay in profit.” she charged me anyway. it didn’t stop there. the chef came out not to apologise, but to argue. same line: “this is how we make it, if you don’t like it, that’s your problem.” then the waiter joined in. three members of staff, all doubling down, zero accountability. and the food across the board wasn’t good either — the dhokla was dense and brick-like, not even close to the soft spongy texture it should be. the idli tasted like it had come straight out of a freezer. the sambar was more of a veg dal — no resemblance to what it’s supposed to be. yes, it’s cheap. but cheap and bad is still a waste of money. the attitude alone is enough reason never to return. if you value your money, your time, or just basic respect as a customer — skip this one.”

“Very busy but sort of "cantine" atmosphere, not helped by the lack of service by the waiter who is stingy with words and smiles. The fact you have to write down your own order is not a problem if you are actually explained to do so. So we waited until we actually got it. Large choice of vegan dishes which possibly explains why it is so busy but, regrettably, the food was bland. No alcohol license but they operate on BYO (fine if you know) but no tap water served at the table either. They got our simple bill of 4 items wrong by £9 which we had to insist to prove and no apologies made when they gave us our change back. No card payment either (which is fine if you know). Very minimalist to the point of being spartan. Never again for us.”

“This is one of our favourite restaurants and it never disappoints — the food is always excellent and the staff are friendly. As a vegetarian, I think it’s a true gem, and my boyfriend who isn’t vegetarian loves it too. The exotic Thai is a must-try dish. Prices are reasonable, portions are generous, and we always leave happy and full. 😊”
