About Gupta's - Indian Sweets and Savouries

It is the original branch of a family-run store that opened in 1979 and now has several branches across the city. Customer Review Summary

Samosas draw the most comment, and reviewers split sharply on them. Fans praise the samosa chaat and the chaats generally as delicious, authentic, and cheap, with kind service and a takeaway format that suits picnics. Close behind, an online sweets order of peda, motichoor ladoo, kaju katli, and habshi halwa arrived on time and was called excellent, though that reviewer did not care for the pure pista. The complaints are substantial and specific. Several describe samosas as soggy, bland, and doughy, with a cold filling, and one found the papdri chaat short on yoghurt, with chaat masala scattered unevenly and too salty in places. Jalebis were limp on a hot day or smelled of stale oil, and a ghatia box was likened to chapati. A regular of thirty years says the pea rolls and samosas no longer match the recipes they remember. One reviewer reports an expired product with a new date sticker placed over the old one. A buyer of twelve samosas and a bag of jalebis binned the jalebis and suggests tasting a piece before buying in bulk.

“Was disappointed jalebis were not crisp on hot day, samosas were soggy. Worst the Philippines ghatia box was a waste buy. They were like chapati instead of melt in the mouth phuli ghatia and yhey had added sugar in it...no carom seeds or pepper. Obviously they hadnt emulsified oil and water along with baking powder to be a frothy light mixture b4 adding besan ...nothing airy about these ghatias... Bombay mix for 5 pounds was worse than 1 pound Cofresh bombay mix. Would not visit again.”

“BEST Indian street food in London with such kind and good service, this really is a hidden gem (and really cheap to boot!). Their samosa chaat changed my life it was that good. Honestly the type of little place where you should aim to try everything on the menu, perfect for picnics in the local area (they're take out only).”

“Very disappointed. Did not expect this from Gupta’s. Selling an expired product by putting new expired date sticker over the old expired date sticker. This is completely unacceptable and a serious breach of trust and safety. People rely on shops to sell safe, genuine products—not to hide expiry dates and risk customers’ health.”

“This place must have had a change of ownership. I have been coming here for 30 years. The pea rolls and samosas used to be the finest on the planet. I was most unsatisfied on my last visit. The beautiful flavors and original recipes have changed and are not the delectable cuisine of past memories. Very nice server though and still good value, but not sure if I'd go out of my way to fill up here again on Indian snacks. Shame.”

“Ordered samosas and papdri chaat. Easily the worst I have had. Samosas had no flavour, very bland, no spices, came out like a doughy pasty. Papdri chaat was also bland and not enough yoghurt, chaat masala was just scattered on top meaning it was too salty to be edible in some areas. Menu is cheaply priced, and service is fine but definitely go somewhere else for better food. Sad because I wanted this place to be good, heard a lot about the Indian food on the street.”
