About Redemption Roasters
Redemption Roasters is a coffee shop in Angel, London, at 96-98 Islington High St, and it roasts its coffee in a roastery behind bars at HMP The Mount. The company trains prisoners, prison leavers and people at risk of offending as baristas, with a route into jobs in its shops, as part of its aim to reduce reoffending in the UK. The counter serves focaccia sandwiches, pastries and cakes, with seasonal drinks alongside. Ordering is self-service, so customers carry their own food and drinks to the tables. The shop spreads across multiple indoor levels, including a grotto space. Bags of coffee are sold to take home, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Coffee is the main draw, with reviewers calling it good, praising the seasonal drinks as varied, and one buying a bag of beans as a gift. Staff come up repeatedly as welcoming and helpful, and several like the idea behind the company. The garden and the hidden grotto are described as lovely, quiet and spacious, though the indoor levels can be crowded. Food draws mixed reactions. One reviewer finds the focaccia sandwiches filling and fun, while others call them dry, bland and tasteless, and one found the pain au raisin not the freshest. Pastries and sandwiches are also called fresh and delicious by others. The coffee does not please everyone either. One reviewer's Americano came back even more bitter after a remake, and the replacement latte tasted like plain milk. Another was served a lukewarm cup. Several call the prices high, and one objects to being prompted for a tip at the card machine while the server stands there.

“Most people serve themselves by taking their food and drinks to the tables and downstairs into the garden, although I did see one person being served. Someone special? The coffee's good and I love the idea behind Redemption Coffee as a company. The food however is not their strongest side. The egg and veg foccacia sandwich that costs £8, if not more, was tasteless and the pain au raisin was not the freshest, either. The chicken sandwich looked tasty but I couldn't have it because there was pancetta in it. I haven't tried their cakes, but they looked good. We sat in the garden which was quiet and spacious, but half of our bench was wet. I had to wait for quite a while to use the toilet as there's only one and it's tiny and not the cleanest. I won't be returning as there are plenty of lovely cafés in Angel to choose from.”

“I visited Redemption Roasters in Islington for breakfast yesterday. The food was delicious, and I also loved the hidden grotto and the lovely garden! What truly sets this place apart, though, is the hospitality. The entire team was incredibly warm and welcoming from the moment I walked in. A massive shoutout to Steve for serving me with such wonderful energy, and attentiveness! I will definitely be back!”

“Male staff at the till assumed I spoke Mandarin and said xie xie to me. He also placed an order for a large Iced Latte without asking me what size I'd like, which costed more than what was stated on the menu. Coffee quality is average, not worth the price (which is above London average) and the service was not good.”

“Fantastic place, wonderful philosophy. Absolutely loved my lunch and coffee here. Bought a bag of their special coffee as a gift for a friend too, which went down very well. Everyone working here is brilliant, and the manager in particular (who was supporting some new employees the day I was in there) is so kind, professional and friendly. Highly recommend!”

“Food looked great from the cabinet but was very average. The focaccia’s were dry, very bland and considering the price it was quite disappointing. Great coffee and even better service! Staff were lovely and helpful. But food needs work.”
