About Café at Storey's Gate

Café at Storey's Gate is a cafe on Birdcage Walk in London, set in a former royal bird keeper's lodge and police station beside St James's Park. That setting makes it a stop for coffee and pastries on the edge of the park. Orders are placed at the counter, where the menu pairs an americano with an almond croissant. A vegan sausage roll is the vegetarian option. The indoor space is small, with limited seating. The shop has no toilet, and the nearby park toilets charge a fee.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the outdoor seating, a back yard terrace beside St James's Park that several call beautiful, with picnic tables for groups and a hedge that shelters it. Inside is small, and a few find it stuffy with tourists, so one reviewer suggests taking food away to eat in the park. Pastries draw the warmest praise, especially an almond croissant, along with an iced coffee and a cookie. A chocolate croissant and an egg mayo and cress sandwich are called decent but nothing special. Coffee divides opinion: one reviewer calls the americano weak and flavourless, while another finds the coffee good. The most repeated complaint is the lack of a toilet, alongside prices described as high, including for a single biscotti, and vegetarian choices limited to a vegan sausage roll. One reviewer describes trash everywhere and doves doing the cleaning up, and another found the person at the register unwelcoming, though others call the staff friendly. Reviewers also mention cavalry horses going by regularly.

“A quiet, convenient spot on the edge of St. James' park provided a quick-ish serve breakfast. A nice alternative in the park if The Cafe is too busy or just a bit too out of the way for you.”

“Small and cozy cafe with good assortment of drinks and snacks. No toilet.”

“We had our morning breakfast here and I was a bit underwhelmed. First of all their prices were on the higher side compared to regular cafés. A SINGLE piece of biscoti costs £2.1! What an absurd price. Theor Chocolate croissant and Egg Mayo & Cress Sandwich was decent but not amazing. Limited seating inside but fairly nice open seating outside. We enjoyed the fresh air. No Toilet available in the shop and No Wi-Fi as well. Decent cafe but I would recommend other shops nearby for better bang for your buck.”

“A small coffee shop with limited indoor space but beautiful outdoor seating, right next to St James’s Park. I had a black coffee — A peaceful spot to relax after a walk in the park.”

“Had an iced coffee and a cooke, both delicious. Inside there is not much sitting space, but for summer on a nice sunny day the area outside is perfect, you feel like you are in the park but are protected by the hedge. There was a lot of sitting space, even picnic tables for big groups. Good place to read or to have a calm conversation.”
