About 640East

Built from up-cycled shipping containers arranged around a courtyard, 640East is an independent cafe and bar on Montgomery Square in London. The cafe side serves coffee alongside pastries and baked goods, including an almond croissant. Iced ginger lemon tea and coffee ice cream are on the menu for colder drinks and sweet treats. As a bar, it pours beers sourced from nearby breweries, and cocktails are offered in the evening and through the summer. The ordering area is small, so orders are taken by name and customers wait for them outside. Music plays in the background, and dogs are welcome. An NHS discount is offered.

Customer Review Summary

Coffee is the main draw at this shipping container café, with one reviewer calling it the best on the wharf and another finding it tasty but not outstanding. Close behind are the friendly, quick staff and the good music playlist, with most of the seating outdoors. Cakes and bakes are called delicious and oversized, and the coffee ice cream and cold drinks draw praise. Several say they would return in summer for cocktails. The complaints are specific. Two reviewers found the pastries, including an almond croissant, tasting a day or two old, and one found the Saturday filter coffee thin and watery. Another described the iced latte as essentially a cup of milk, and one thought the ginger lemon tea was overloaded with ginger. One reviewer called the service incredibly slow, and another criticised hot drinks served in takeaway cups that cannot be recycled. One also noted the ordering area is so small that customers wait outside.

“Went on a Saturday morning and it didn't land. The filter was thin and watery, which usually means batch brew that's been standing rather than anything wrong with the beans - they use Caravan, so the raw material is good. The pastries tasted like they'd been out since the previous day. Prices are Canary Wharf prices, so you notice. The space itself is great - two shipping containers round a courtyard, plenty of outdoor seating, a nice place to sit. I suspect it's built around weekday office trade and simply doesn't turn over enough at the weekend to keep the filter fresh. Might well be a different experience on a Tuesday.”

“Montgomery Square is one of the most attractive public spaces in Canary Wharf. Surrounded by modern architecture, waterside views, cafés, and office towers, it offers a pleasant atmosphere whether you’re working nearby or simply exploring the area. The square is well maintained, clean, and benefits from excellent transport connections via the Jubilee line, DLR, and Elizabeth line. What stands out most is the balance between the busy financial district environment and the open public space. There are plenty of places to sit, grab a coffee, or enjoy lunch outdoors. The surrounding estate feels safe and professionally managed, with impressive landscaping and regular events throughout the year. The location also provides easy access to shopping, restaurants, and waterfront walks, making it a great spot for both professionals and visitors. While it can become crowded during weekday lunch hours, the overall experience remains excellent. A modern, vibrant, and well-designed part of Canary Wharf that showcases the best of London’s Docklands. Pros * Excellent transport links * Clean and well-maintained public space * Great cafés and restaurants nearby * Attractive waterside setting * Safe and professional environment Cons * Busy during office hours * Can feel corporate compared with other London neighbourhoods Overall: A stylish and convenient destination in Canary Wharf, ideal for work, meetings, coffee breaks, and enjoying the waterfront atmosphere.”

“Great food and drinks . However, horrible atmosphere by what I believe were the managers (sitting around) It is really disappointing to overhear them gossiping and talking negatively about their bartenders, does not reflect well on the company.”

“Great decor and vibes but the service is incredibly slow and not worth the wait. The ice latte is essentially a tasteless cup of milk. Would like to try this place for drinks but wouldn’t recommend or come back for coffee.”
  • Nawal Alkabkabi
“The coffee tastes good, but not amazing. The service is fine. The café atmosphere isn't really my thing. I ordered a Corridor Coffee.”
