About The Star By Liverpool Street

The Star By Liverpool Street is a pub on Middlesex St in London, just off Bishopsgate, spread over 10,000 sq ft and open daily. The ground floor pours keg beers, lagers and cider, though it is not a real ale pub, and the bar menu includes burgers and fries. The Firestarter restaurant sits inside the bar and serves flatbread and steak. In the basement, five individually themed private karaoke booths and two large function rooms give groups space of their own. A disco and karaoke area also hosts open mic karaoke. A bottomless prosecco brunch comes with rock bingo and a DJ. Big football matches, including England World Cup games, show on lots of TVs, and entry to screenings needs a ticket bought in advance. The ticket does not reserve a table.

Customer Review Summary

Football screenings for England matches draw the most mentions, with lots of TVs and good sound and picture praised, but the experience splits sharply. Two reviewers describe arriving hours early for the semi-final to find every ground-floor table reserved, despite being told tables could not be booked. They ended up standing, on chairs with no table, or sent to a basement with strobe lighting. One says drinks ordered from roving bar staff never arrived, and the manager said the order had already been processed. Another reports paying an entry fee after being told to come back later, then watching reserved tables that went unclaimed given to customers who arrived afterward. Others found the bar staff excellent and the burgers very good quality, though one waited a while for a drink. Away from the football, diners at the Firestarter restaurant praise the flatbread, chicken wings, truffle fries, and veggie options like the mushroom skewer and Hispi cabbage, with one calling the steak a little salty. A bottomless prosecco brunch with rock bingo gets called fun, and one birthday host received a free tequila shot after the staff helped clean up.

“A bottomless prosecco brunch with Rock bingo. It was such fun. Steph mingled and made sure everyone was enjoying themselves. James the dj made sure the music flowed seamlessly and played tunes everyone could sing and dance to . A great Saturday afternoon ☺️”

“We watched a number of football matches here during the World Cup, but sadly our experience during the semi-final was incredibly disappointing. We paid £11 for tickets in advance and we were told it wasn’t possible to reserve tables - clearly that wasn’t the case. On arrival (around 6pm), all tables were reserved and the seats that were available had been snapped up by those arriving earlier which meant many of us had to stand. There was also chaos when it came to ordering drinks, we had ordered drinks from the roving bar-staff, but had to chase this multiple times and in the end got told to speak to the manager as the “order had already been processed” without us receiving them. It seems simply that the bar had put greed before experience, overselling/booking spaces and not putting enough staff on in order to fulfil orders/keep up with the demand. A shame as we’d visited so many times before this and had a good experience.”

“Booked tickets to watch the England vs Argentina semi final. Upon booking the tickets it stated that tables can not be reserved and therefore get there earlier to secure a spot. Therefore I get to the venue 3 hours before kick off to find every table on the ground floor had been reserved. We were therefore ushered into this disco like basement which was like a sauna to watch the game with strobe lighting. The burgers were very good quality and reasonable price, and despite being busy for the football as expected, the staff behind the bar were excellent and managed to get served promptly. The tvs had good sound and picture.”

“I don't recommend this bar. Coming from Paris to watch the England match, we hadn't booked. We looked for a bar at 5pm for 10pm. We were told "you'll be able to get a spot if you come back at 8:30pm." Being cautious, we came at 7:30pm. We were charged £10 as agreed. There wasn't a single free table. We gave up on the idea of looking for another bar since the £10 payment is taken at the entrance and we weren't sure we'd find anything better so late, but with the feeling that we'd been a bit misled when we asked at 5pm. Making the best of it, we sat on empty chairs with no table. We squatted at a reserved table to quickly wolf down the burgers we'd ordered. Other customers without reservations arrived afterward and sat down like us on seats with no table. Eventually some reserved tables became free because those customers never showed up. The bar reassigned them to customers who had arrived after us, probably because they were English — even though we speak English, our accent gives away that we're French. So there we were, the worst-seated people in the bar, even though we'd paid £10 to get in, ordered 2 beers, 2 burgers and fries, and had been hanging around from 7:30pm to 10pm. I don't recommend this bar. This practice is dishonest. In Paris, if you show up without a reservation, you arrive early, you're willing to order food and drinks, and you get given a table with a good view and are treated like any other customer. If that's not possible, they don't take your money — they tell you "sorry, we're full."”

“Spread over 10,000 sq ft our biggest site to date will open, just off Bishopsgate on the edge of The City. We will have a pub for the modern age on the ground floor with amazing beers, cocktails and Street food. While in the basement, we will have 2 large private function rooms and 5 individually themed karaoke booths.”
