Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the friendly welcome from the bar staff and the banter with regulars at this no frills local boozer, with good value keg lager close behind. One reviewer enjoyed a pint of Madri newly added to the line up, and another praises the keg beers while noting nothing is on cask. Others mention a pool table with free games, a free jukebox, darts, sport on TV, a small beer garden and a pub dog. One visitor comes for Millwall games, and several describe old boys settled in for the football and locals who strike up conversation with newcomers. The recurring criticism is the look of the place. Reviewers call the decor dated, the carpet worn and the black frontage in need of a freshen up, and one says it felt like travelling back 40 years. Even so, they describe the atmosphere as upbeat and quiet. One group recalls the bartender joking about the age of the carpet, and another reviewer is pleased to be handed free sandwiches at the bar.

“I visited here on a Saturday night with my friends before we made our way to a nearby nightclub (MOT). When we walked in, it felt like we had travelled 40 years back in time. The decor was dated and the atmosphere was of a local, no frills pub. The bartender was a friendly Londoner with down to earth charm and banter. He joked with us about the age of the carpet and made us feel very welcome. We enjoyed two good-value rounds in the quiet environment and struck up conversations with some of the locals. It was a great experience. We got a taste of real community and local London, compared with the 'trendy', often characterless, pubs. Would definitely return if we're in the area again - especially to be served by our bartender friend.”

“What a proper little boozer!! From Essex but came here for Millwall games. Not many pubs still do free bar snacks! Let alone free sandwiches”
  • London City Pubs
“This is a proper solid drinking spot in Rotherhithe / Surrey Quays. There are no airs or graces here in this south London pub but you will find people who know each other and a friendly welcome from behind the bar. The place is small and narrow but it has all the enjoyable features of a classic local boozer. There's a pool table with free games on Thursdays, filled rolls to soak up the lager, a beer garden, a free juke box on Sundays, sports on TV, darts, old boys enjoying an afternoon drink, lager and a pub dog. There's a sense of community here too, which is welcome. While the black frontage needs a bit of a freshen up, it's a decent place to stop off for a pint. As I found out, it's also a good starting point for a pub crawl. These kind of pubs are so vital, they are the familiar face in difficult times. Glad this one still exists. It's part of the Town Centre Inns group which operates 16 small pubs in London and the South East.”
