About The Ship & Whale
The Ship & Whale is a pub on Gulliver St in London, established in 1803 and set with a garden for drinking outdoors. The bar serves real ale and beer. The kitchen runs a Sunday roast with a choice of beef, lamb shank or pork belly, and a vegan version of the roast is on the menu too. Ribs and steak sit among the mains, and burgers come in both regular and vegetarian versions. Staff bring food and drinks to the table. The pub is open daily, and it is quiet early in the day before it fills up.

Customer Review Summary
The Sunday roast is what reviewers praise most, with beef, lamb shank and pork belly called divine and the portions described as generous. Close behind are the ribs, called huge, and a thick, tender steak, while a vegetarian burger also earns a good word. Reviewers describe a cosy, traditional pub with friendly staff, good beer, well kept real ale and an outdoor garden. Several value the local crowd and the lack of an influencer scene. One parent calls it genuinely baby-friendly, and another notes that well behaved dogs are welcome. The main complaint comes from a vegan diner who ordered the vegan Sunday roast and received what was essentially a breaded veggie burger with no roast potatoes, which put them off returning for the vegan menu. Another reviewer, though, calls the vegan section surprisingly solid. One regular recalls the owner keeping the pub open through a delayed England match, with the kitchen already closed, so a small crowd could watch to the final whistle.

“Basia and Caroline for the win. I am not a hardcore football fan - but when Basia said she would stay open for the England-Mexico game, I decided to go. The match was delayed by an hour - they didn't care. Stayed open until the very end. There was only a dozen of us and naturally the kitchen was closed. Some guys ordered pizza. No music, we didn't socialise - I think most of us were there because of Basia. It was the absolute best match I have seen and not because of the players and the result. Core memory to the max. I challenge you to find a better host - an absolute unique gem, this is what "community" should be all about. God bless.”

“Absolutely cracking spot. Friendly staff and fantastic building in which you could still feel bustle of the docks. Didn’t try the food but look forward to that on future visits. A relief to find a proper pub which is geared for adults and not overrun by influencers or those on ‘instagram adventures’, as so much of the South Bank seems to be these days. Great work guys.”

“Very nice posh pub, tastefully furnished. I would definitely come here again for a pint or two, and the Sunday lunch is very good. There is an outdoor area. Well behaved dogs are welcome. There is well kept real ale available.”
