Quick info
About The Brown Dog, Barnes
Down a quiet road in Barnes, London, The Brown Dog, Barnes is a gastropub in a Victorian building at 28 Cross St. The back garden holds a shack that serves pizza under a peach tree, with the Ndjuja pizza on the list alongside an anchovy and caper one. Inside, the kitchen works from a Modern British menu. Sunday lunch brings roast beef and pork with Yorkshire pudding, and cauliflower cheese comes on the side. A BBQ version of the Sunday lunch swaps in sirloin steak, sea bass and chicken thighs. The bar pours beers on tap and mixes Bloody Marys, and dogs are welcome. A pub quiz runs monthly.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return for the Sunday roast, with one calling the roast beef extremely tender and praising the homemade Yorkshire and the cauliflower cheese, and another saying the pork was cooked to perfection. Close behind are the pizzas, including the Ndjuja and an anchovy caper version eaten in the sunny back garden under a peach tree, and a BBQ Sunday lunch of sardines, croquettes, sirloin steaks and sea bass. A few also single out the Bloody Mary and the beers on tap. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and welcoming. The caveats centre on value and recent consistency. One reviewer found the burrata and anchovy sourdough tiny for its price and the chips poor, while another got squid that tasted of vegetable oil and a Caesar with sliced steak on a halved cos lettuce, noting the food had been excellent until the last year. A diner at the BBQ lunch had to move indoors because the garden lacked umbrellas, and the team arranged a covered table.

“We came to the BBQ Sunday lunch, it was absolutely delicious! Everyone enjoyed the starters of Sardines, Labneh, croquettes and Caesar salad. The sirloin steaks were super tender, sea-bass beautifully cooked, and the chicken was plentiful with three thighs! Pls do more of these bbq’s! When we arrived we had to move inside due to lack of umbrellas and full sun in the garden, we were very grateful they worked out a covered solution to our outdoor seating. More umbrellas definitely required, but very appreciative you made it work for us. Definitely returning for the next bbq!”

“A favourite local pub in Barnes. Always a warm welcome and a friendly smile on arrival. Have been here many times and never been disappointed either with just a quick pint, a take away pizza from the shack or a lunch or dinner. Warmly recommended if you’re looking for a cosy local with friendly staff and great food.”

“I was really looking forward to trying this pub for dinner but left feeling completely ripped off. The “sourdough” with burrata and anchovies is listed at £11, which works out to £5.50 per bite (see photo). I couldn’t believe my eyes when it arrived at the table. The £6 chips were even worse and looked like they came straight from the reject pile of a low-tier frozen-to-microwave restaurant. Totally not worth the money.”

“We asked for squid as a starter that tasted of vegetable oil. A main which was a a cos lettuce cut down the middle with some steak slices covered in a dubious Caesar dressing . So disappointing . Def going to a cheap chain if this is what you get for the price . I do feel for the pubs but it’s not sustainable if this is what you get . This food here has been excellent until the last year”

“Google needs to add a 6th star option purely for this establishment. What’s a hidden gem; truly lovely staff serving excellent food and the best Bloody Mary I have ever had. I’m lucky this is walkable from where I live but in truth is come a long way. Oh and pub quiz is monthly… I’ll be back for that! Thank you everyone at The Brown Dog for a lovely afternoon today.”
