Customer Review Summary
The garden draws the most praise, described as gorgeous on a sunny day, spacious, and like a secret garden with lush plants, central trees and cover for shade. Close behind are the staff, called friendly, helpful and welcoming, and the food, where the double cheeseburger with triple smoked bacon, the gnocchi with fresh bread and the crab pasta all earn compliments. Fish and chips splits opinion. One diner calls it large and tasty, while a regular of 15 years found it among the worst in a long time, with overly seasoned fish and a dark brown batter that was not crispy. Another reviewer who came for Sunday roast found half the menu sold out and the ham roast both hot and cold, and called the wine and beer good but expensive. One reviewer reports staff found it funny when a large dog sat on a chair with its paws on a table, though another praises the pub as dog friendly throughout. A three generation Saturday lunch with vegetarian, vegan and no bread requests ended with burgers all round.

“Saturday lunch at The Maynard, we were 3 generations and each with specific palates which were well catered for here; a vegetarian, a vegan and no bread! We thoroughly enjoyed our burgers although no bun for me I thought chef could have put my burger on lettuce? Staff were gorgeous and made our lunch even better with their warmth, helpfulness and professionalism. Recommend and will be back, thank you!”

“Went for a quick early evening drink outside in the garden. Passing back through the pub and saw a couple with a large white dog who was sitting on a chair with its front paws on the table. Spoke to staff to ask what they were going to do, they thought it was funny. Pointed out I won't be eating there as that is so unhygienic. Still no response from staff. There's a big difference between being dog friendly and being insanitary.”

“So sad to write this poor review but just had the most disappointing experience here in my 15 years of coming. We came into a pretty vibey atmosphere without a booking and were told that we wouldn’t be able to order food for at least 20 mins because they had a party out back. When we did order, the food was pretty quick but the quality was just poor I’m sorry to say. The fish n chips was one of the worst I’ve had in a long time - the fish was overly seasoned & had a weird ‘batter’ that can only be described as a weird dark brown sock. Not crispy, not light, just sad. I’ve had so many good experiences at the Maynard & the food has been really excellent at times but I’m sorry to say that despite living just round the corner I won’t be back for food.”
