About TAJ shawarma

TAJ shawarma is a Syrian restaurant at 45 Lodge Ln in Liverpool, where the cooking happens in front of customers. Lamb pide is baked in a stone oven, while shawarma and charcoal-grilled chicken are prepared at the counter. The chicken shawarma comes with a choice of sauces and customization options, including tahini. Rotisserie chicken is cut from a spinning pole, and a full chicken is served as a meal with chips or rice, salad and pickles. Orders are placed at the till and paid for first, and the food follows after a wait in the queue. The room has very little seating for dining in. The restaurant sits opposite Spendwell.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the chicken, and the whole rotisserie chicken meal with rice, salad and pickles gets the strongest praise, with the charcoal grilled chicken and roast chicken also called brilliant. Close behind is the chicken shawarma, described as crunchy and juicy, with plenty of sauces to customise it, and the lamb pide baked in a stone oven and packed with lamb. Several mention freshly made bread, chicken and sauce, friendly staff, quick service and local-friendly prices. One reviewer says the shawarma beats most they had in Arabic countries, and another says it tastes like Damascus. Seating for eating in is described as very limited. The harshest reviews are about the chicken and the service. One customer found the full chicken tasted of old oil, the bread and salad poor, the "tahini" turned out to be garlic mayonnaise, and the chips were underseasoned. Another calls the food decent but wants friendlier customer service. The most memorable positive detail is a counter worker who volunteered a refund after an order was charged for sauces the customer wasn't taking.

“Great place for middle eastern food, delicious food, huge menu and generous portions. Staff are friendly and helpful. My favourite is the charcoal grilled chicken, roast chicken is also brilliant.”

“Decent food but they really don't understand or respect allergies. They openly mix garlic and other sauces with the same spoon, IT'S SHOCKING. Food hygiene is low on their agenda, it's very much apparent. Can someone please explain to them, you could end up really harming someone. Also a little friendlier customer services wouldn't go amiss.”

“I made the mistake of going here after being recommended by someone at Tureens up the road. He tried to push in front of me in the queue and I told him I was waiting to be served. After that he suddenly became really nice we got chatting and he said: “Have you tried Taj opposite Spendwell? The full chicken is nice and juicy.” A few weeks later I was back at Tureens for their full chicken. After I paid, the guy says: “Sorry, it won’t be ready for half an hour.” Kids and wife at home starving, night before Ramadan, traffic everywhere… so I thought I’d try Taj down the road (remembering that recommendation). “I’ll have a refund please.” Eventually I get to Taj opposite Spendwell. I walk in and people are just standing around everywhere. I asked if there’s a queue or if people had already been served. I asked the guy behind the till: “Are they in the queue?” “Yes, what do you want?” “Two full chickens please, with chips.” He looked at me like I’d just asked for two elephants. “With chips?” “…Yes.” “And salad please.” Tapped my card. £28. I go and stand in the “queue.” Five minutes later: “Hi, what do you want?” “You’ve already served me, two full chickens with chips and salad.” “Oh yes, two full chickens, one moment.” He cuts two rotisserie chickens off the spinning pole from the very bottom (they looked well done… maybe too well done) and passes them to his colleague. Another five minutes go by. His colleague looks at me: “Chicken shawarma?” “No mate, two full chickens with chips and salad.” “Oh yes ok.” He adds some chips and a piece of bread to each box with a stingy amount of salt. “There you go.” “Can I have some salad please?” He looked at me again like I was asking for state secrets, then put some salad in a small box. “Can I have some chilli and tahini sauce too please?” Another look. Then one chilli sauce and three “tahini” pots. Bags everything up. As I’m leaving, a Land Rover Defender pulls up outside. As I cross the road I see the driver laughing to himself. I assume he’s the owner and carry on. I get home, call my wife on the way so she warms up the vegetable curry and rice to go with it. Kids are excited, they’re expecting Tureens-level chicken (or better, according to the recommendation). We plate everything up, say thanks to God and start eating. My wife takes the first bite and immediately pauses. My daughter tries it: “OMG THIS IS DISGUSTING 🤢” I try it thinking they’re exaggerating. They weren’t. It was honestly the worst chicken I’ve ever tasted. It had that horrible old oil taste, like it had been cooked in the same oil for years. I will eat almost anything but I couldn’t eat this. I tried the bread, also bad. They’d put some sauce inside it that made it worse. Then I tried the “tahini.” It wasn’t tahini. It was garlic mayonnaise. And not the good kind. My other daughter tried the salad: “EW WHAT IS THIS DAD?!” My son started grabbing the chips because they were the only edible thing. Suddenly there was a full on fight over the chips. “He’s got more than me!” I had to split them evenly like wartime rations. Even then, they barely had any salt. My wife said, “Take it back or give it to someone, we can’t waste food Ramadan is tomorrow.” I started reading Google reviews and one mentioned food poisoning. “I can’t give this to anyone they might get sick. Throw it in the bin.” Then it hits me. That guy from Tureens didn’t recommend Taj out of kindness… He sent me there for revenge because I didn’t let him queue-jump. Moral of the story: Never trust a stranger who suddenly becomes friendly after you block them in a queue. And never underestimate the destructive power of wounded male ego.”
