Quick info
About Mr Zhang's Kitchen
Seating spread across a ground floor and a basement level gives Mr Zhang's Kitchen room for diners at 8-10 Myrtle Street in Liverpool, a Chinese restaurant that takes cash only, with no cards accepted, so plan payment before you arrive. The menu is extensive and written in Chinese with English translations, and the team helps with picking dishes and passes requests such as allergy notes through to the kitchen. Kung Pao chicken is ordered repeatedly, and many of the dishes come spicy. Portions run very large, and parties frequently take leftovers home in a takeaway pot. Food reaches the table quickly after ordering. The place fills up, so booking ahead is recommended rather than relying on a free table. High chairs are available for families eating with young children. It opens Tuesday through Sunday and closes on Mondays.

Customer Review Summary
Enormous portions anchor nearly every account: diners describe one bowl of rice being more than enough for two, a hot and sour soup that would easily serve six to eight, and leftovers packed into a takeaway pot by a server. Close behind is the food itself, repeatedly called authentic mainland Chinese and flavoursome, with Kung Pao chicken named most often, alongside black peppered beef, half a duck with all the trimmings, a squid dish, hand-pulled noodles, the pork belly appetizer and Hong Shao Rou, while one visitor found the hotpot rich and comforting. Several mention the extensive menu written in Chinese with English subtitles and staff who helped them choose, and one suggests a quick search for unfamiliar items. Heat recurs, with dishes described as very spicy. A few note the no frills setting, one calling it probably not ideal for a date, and another recommends reserving since it was busy. One diner with allergies recalls a server writing a personal note to the chef.

“Absolute hidden gem. Fantastic selection of foods and great quiet atmosphere in the early afternoon and a bit more lively of an evening. I like the condiment bar where you can prepare your own sauce mix.”

“I think a lot of Chinese restaurants in Liverpool need to look at Mr Zhangs to learn a thing or two about how flavoursome and delicious authentic mainland Chinese food can really be. I’ve been visiting near enough weekly for the past two years, always consistent, always generous portions and always mouth watering. I’d recommend anyone to try and expand their palate by exploring their way around Mr Zhangs diverse menu sometime! Can’t wait for our next visit!”

“Had an amazing experience at Mr Zhang’s Kitchen, Liverpool. The hotpot was absolutely delicious — rich flavours, great variety, and really comforting. What truly made the experience special was the lady staff member who looked after us near closing time. Even though we came in late, she was incredibly kind, patient, and accommodating. Usually at closing time staff can feel rushed or distant, but she was the complete opposite — warm, helpful, and genuinely caring till the very end. She made sure we were comfortable and taken care of without ever making us feel like a burden. Her service honestly stood out and made the night memorable. Huge appreciation to her and the team. Will definitely be coming back!”

“Great Chinese restaurant to try in Liverpool. Many options available in the menu to try from. I would always go for the pork belly appetizer which is great value and spicy-ish and also the Hong Shao Rou which is definitely tasty. Go to place for Chinese food in Liverpool.”
